Publisher's Description

With her usual warmth, perceptiveness, and humor, Newbery Medal winner Beverly Cleary creates a classic coming of age story about the joys and worries of a young girl's first crush.

It seems too good to be true. The most popular boy in school has asked Jane out—and she's never even dated before. In this wholesome teenage romance, Stan is tall and good-looking, friendly and hard-working—everything Jane ever dreamed of. But is she ready for this?

Suppose her parents won't let her go? What if she's nervous and makes a fool of herself? Maybe he'll think she's too young. If only she knew all the clever things to say. If only she were prettier. If only she were ready for this...

  • Sweet High School Romance: Jane Purdy is fifteen and has never been on a date. When the most popular boy in school asks her out, she’s a bundle of nerves wondering if she’s pretty enough or clever enough to keep his interest.
  • First Love Jitters: From worrying about what to wear to hoping her parents don’t embarrass her, this story perfectly captures the heart-pounding, palm-sweating anxieties of a first crush.
  • Finding Yourself: A heartwarming and humorous journey about a young girl learning to be comfortable in her own skin, even when everything feels awkward.
  • 1950s Nostalgia: Step back in time to an era of soda fountains, school dances, and wholesome dates, brought to life by a master storyteller.

Author Bio

Beverly Cleary is one of America's most beloved authors. As a child, she struggled with reading and writing. But by third grade, after spending much time in her public library in Portland, Oregon, she found her skills had greatly improved. Before long, her school librarian was saying that she should write children's books when she grew up.

Instead she became a librarian. When a young boy asked her, "Where are the books about kids like us?" she remembered her teacher's encouragement and was inspired to write the books she'd longed to read but couldn't find when she was younger. She based her funny stories on her own neighborhood experiences and the sort of children she knew. And so, the Klickitat Street gang was born!

Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the American Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented to her in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature. Dear Mr. Henshaw won the Newbery Medal, and Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Ramona and Her Father have been named Newbery Honor Books. Her characters, including Beezus and Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ralph, the motorcycle-riding mouse, have delighted children for generations.
