Fervent is one of those books that you just know you will want read again and again. I have read many books on prayer, but very few come close to a five star rating. A couple of things that make this book stand out for me, the first being the way the author has written this book. She writes as if she is sitting across from you and the two of you are having a conversation. She doesn't use big fancy words, she is not preachy, not judgmental, but writes as one friend speaking to another. As one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread.
The second thing is at the beginning of each chapter she starts with the sentence "If I were your enemy I would.." And each chapter talks about the ways that our enemy ambushes and attacks us, some of which we might already be familiar with, while others might be new to us. She includes several scripture verses related to each chapters theme. A place for the reader to start in memorizing scripture and praying for others.
I believe that all prayer is valuable, but I also believe that a person can grow beyond the check off list. One of the enemy's lies that a lot of Christians buy into is, "I'm not a prayer warrior or I just don't have the time." The author encourages us to spend as much time as possible in prayer. Prayer is worship and the more you pray the more God a lines your will to His and the more you will crave that communion with God.
While my house does not support a prayer closet, I have decided that I need to "bake my home in prayer".
The author has a wonderful sense of humor and there were places in the book she had me laughing so hard I was crying. She encourages the reader to write in the book, tear out it's pages for others, and in the back she includes tear out note cards so that we may write out who we are praying for.
There is a reason this book won best book of 2016.
I have bought several copies and am prayerfully deciding who I should give them to.
Fantastic book that offers a journey of discovery into motivations of the heart that keep us from having a powerful prayer life. The book provides insights to move past fears, hurts and insecurities to find strength and wholeness in Jesus. It unveils and exposes the strategies of the devil (and the truth of scripture) so we can fight with spiritual weapons and not those of the flesh. Ms. Shirer is very 'real' author that provides clear and balanced teaching on how to pray with passion and fervor.
