Series: Defenders of Justice
Mercy Brennan followed in her father's footsteps in a law enforcement career, but she has no interest in any other connection to him. A U.S. Marshal in St. Louis, Missouri, she's assigned to a joint task force with the St. Louis PD that puts her back into contact with her father and in the sights of St. Louis's most powerful gang.
When the gang has reason to believe Mercy has possession of some highly sensitive and incriminating information, her boss assigns Mark St. Laurent--a Deputy U.S. Marshal and Mercy's ex-boyfriend--to get her out of town until they can guarantee her safety.
Initially unaware of the danger she's in and uncomfortable working with Mark, Mercy's frustration escalates when she discovers the extent her boss and Mark have been keeping her in the dark. It isn't until a freak ice storm hits, stranding them at a remote location and out of contact with the district office, that the full severity of their situation becomes clear. As the storm worsens, the forces of nature combine with a deadly enemy closing in to put their lives at imminent risk. Can they survive long enough for help to arrive--if help is even coming at all?

It was an edge of your seat stay up all night book. It kept my interest all the way through from the first word to the last. What a great book to read! I would recommend this book. I love all of Nancy Mehl's books.

Mercy Brennan followed her estranged father into a law enforcement career and is now working as a U. S. Marshal. She is assigned to a joint task force with the St. Louis Police, along with her partner, Mark St. Laurent....who happens to be her ex-boyfriend. Mercy's best friend and fellow law enforcement officer, Lt. Tally Williams, joins them in their hunt for members of a dangerous drug cartel and gang members who are working with them. The team is sent out to a "safe house" when it becomes apparent that the cartel is targeting Mercy because they believe she has something they want very badly to retrieve. The tension mounts as they drive into a snow and ice storm that no one expected. Now they are stranded in the middle of nowhere with no way to communicate with their superiors to let them know what is going on. What happens next?? Will the cartel arrive before help does?? Not going to tell you the rest of the story...you need to read it for yourself!!! I think you will love it....I know I did!!

This is why I appreciate authors that are able to create stories that are both engaging without the need to conform to what is no so acceptable in the world regarding language and sexuality.
We meet Mercy Brennan a flawed character with a challenging upbringing. She is not a believer and in fact, is an angry, bitter lady. She's had a difficult upbringing but she was able to turn her difficulty and come out of her situation as, first a police officer, and then a US Marshal.
When her estranged father, also a police officer, is murdered - Mercy's life is turned upside down. Her ex-boyfriend and former partner, Mark is tasked with getting Mercy out of town for her protection. What they don't realize is corruption has seeped into the US Marshals office and keeping Mercy alive will be more difficult than they imagined.

"I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own." That done, FATAL FROST is the first book in Ms. Mehl's newest series and it is definitely an edge-of-your-seat reading experience. In the first few pages we are introduced to the gang-ridden streets of the inner city of St. Louis--an area where you don't go with your car doors unlocked! And even where you don't stop at traffic lights if you see gangs loitering around!
Sadly, the recent opinion of law enforcement is foremost in this book. They are the enemies, and killers, and it is up to them to take control of the city and get rid of the nasty, hated, evil police (please note, this is not the opinion of this reviewer and not of the author, this is simply a work of fiction that is saturated in the opinions of some in society).
You know who is behind the murders, behind the crimes in this fast paced book, and you know what they are after. What you don't know is enough to keep the pages turning. Where... How... When... and Why.
Those who love romantic suspense will love FATAL FROST. Mercy is a U.S. Marshal, so technically not police, though close enough. She is hard, having seen and been through a lot, and isn't much on close friendships, relationships, and even God. She has a thick wall that will take a super-hero to breach. As a result she did keep the reader at a distance, but once she began to open up to others in the book she began to let the reader in.
A fantastic suspense that is sure to keep you up late reading.

S. Marshal character named Mercy Brennan. Mercys coworkers give her a nickname that implies how well guarded Mercy keeps her heart and life. As readers progress through the book, it is revealed why Mercy protects herself from what she believes will end up hurting or breaking her heart. Mercy has few friends from within the service and from other agencies, but with danger rapidly closing in on her life Mercy may have to face her past head on!
In a tale of danger, suspense and unending battles, the flavor of a great suspenseful tale is revealed. The author does more than simply write a good book; she draws her audience into the adventure of the story and keeps them engaged as the plot unfolds. At times, when I least expected, Nancy Mehl would bring a sudden change into the tale that would ramp up my heartbeat!
Nancy Mehl has written many books in her career and I have enjoyed reading her novels. Now, in her Defenders series, I was even more engrossed in the plot, the lives of her characters and the suspense that didnt let up till the very end. Personally, I cannot wait until the next story of the series comes out so I can see where Mercy is as well as some of the supporting cast. Keep up the great storytelling Nancy!
