The Artist LibrarianAge: 18-24Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A *New* Old Fashioned Way (to Look at Romance)!January 5, 2016The Artist LibrarianAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The Old Fashioned Way: Reclaiming the Lost Art of Romance is a 40 day devotional book based on the 2015 Christian/faith-based film, Old Fashioned. Author Ginger Kolbaba invites readers to re-evaluate what they think about God, love, and romantic relationships in topical daily devotionals. Each devotional is about 4-6 pages long and opens with a quote (often an excerpt of the Old Fashioned screenplay), a devotion focused on a specific idea or topic, a passage or excerpt of relevant Scripture, and either journaling prompts or questions to consider. Many of the devotionals also feature a short prayer based on the topic of that day.
I dont normally use devotional books for personal devotions, but I did enjoy working my way through this book. Despite the title, Kolbaba didnt say all Christians must court or anything like that, but emphasized the importance of seeking God when coming up with your personal standards regarding romantic relationships, that it was something between you and God, something that can vary depending on the individual. One of the things that I felt I got out of this was focusing on being the person God wants me to be, doing what He has for me, no matter what the state of my love life is and to try not to worry and to trust His timing. However, in a world where casual dating and "hookup culture" is becoming more common, I think getting people to think about intentional dating or personal standards, like this book does, is something to encourage.
Finishing this book has only left me more eager to finally watch the Old Fashioned film! Recommended for Christian singles looking for an evenhanded approach to modern dating, love, and romance. 4 & 1/2 stars.
[Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for review purposes.]
Laura of Harvest Lane CottageCarthage, MOAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Good for married or unmarriedJune 29, 2015Laura of Harvest Lane CottageCarthage, MOAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My thoughts:
The Old Fashioned Way, written by Ginger Kolbaba, is a forty day devotional book designed to help you think through not only what you think about dating and the things involved but also what God thinks about dating and the things involved. She holds that the old fashioned way is still good for today.
Some of the topics:
purpose of marriage
One thing that surprised me in the book was her endorsement of the on-line matchmaking services. She feels that the services help to match people up better than just a random meeting. I'd never really thought about that. I suppose, if it were a Christian service, it could be helpful. She also addressed respect for self and others. She dove right into the issue of people texting or being on their phones instead of paying attention to the people they're with. Bravo! Big pet peeve here!
I think that married or unmarried people will find value in this book.
I received copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Heart2HeartVictorville, CAAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A great devotional that works with the biblical perspective on relationships!June 28, 2015Heart2HeartVictorville, CAAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The devotional, The Old Fashioned Way, reclaiming the lost art of romance by Ginger Kolbaba is perfect in allowing readers to gain an idea of what it means to court others in lieu of dating them and opens up different perspectives I have never considered because often times we only look at our own wants and needs and remain indifferent to those of someone we might be interested in. Each chapter takes into consideration very different ideas explored both from the movie, Old Fashioned, but other world views as well and gives you some amazing biblical insight that is guaranteed to spark some very different conversations in your own relationships and that of raising morally conscience children.
I believe more than ever, this is practical advice that provides the proper perspective both men and women need in regards to the alternatives to dating and relationships, and that is understanding the ideals and principles from both the Bible and from old fashioned courtships that keep purity and boundaries in place until marriage happens. It is something I feel women are searching for as they strive to find romance in often times the wrong places, wrong people and wrong relationships, because they are willing to give up and compromise on their personal beliefs for love.
I received The Old Fashioned Way devotional by Ginger Kolbaba compliments of Propeller LLC and Tyndale House Publishers for my honest review of these wonderful book. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review outside of a free copy of the book for my honest opinion. This is a must have for anyone considering dating, parenting and relationships from a Christian and biblical perspective. It offers an alternative to what the world would view offers society today and in keeping with the biblical and moral standards found in the Bible. For me, this is well worth all 5 out of 5 stars especially when parents are looking for an alternative way to keeping purity before marriage and a biblical view on relationships and courtship! Chivalry is definitely not dead!!
lcjohnson1988IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Devotional is great!June 26, 2015lcjohnson1988IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Over the years much has changed both in the body of believers that meet and society as a whole. Sometimes it is hard to be able to see any difference when comparing one group with another, or even person to person. Personalities, location, likes and dislikes make up part of what makes one person unlike another. However, humanity shares some traits like sinful nature or pride, which knows no bounds;we are all affected.
So when Tyndale released a devotional titled, The Old Fashioned Way, I wanted to preview what was being presented. I love the movie by the same title not for any other reason than it seeks to restore what tends to get lost in our relating to God and others. The devotion has 40 days worth of topics that encourage audiences to journal and seek Gods wisdom from the Bible. The focus is not on seeking a mate, but on seeking God for the sole reason of being loved by God and returning that affection.
We seek to have a mate or just someone to hang around with and do activities with usually because we dont like being alone. Frankly, we arent created to be alone. But seeking to have a person fill the area that only God can fill in our hearts wont work. Using a devotional that encourages focusing on our one-to-one relationship with God first is a treasure. It doesnt matter what our marital status or financial status is as those are measurements that will pass away one day. However, the one relationship that is eternal is our individual one with God.
He is the creator of romance and His Word reminds us repeatedly of His deep abiding love for each one of us. Here is a devotional tool that you might find helpful in learning to hear, talk and relate with Your loving God regularly. From that, all other relationships are touched. The question now is are you willing to live a life where your focus is on your walk with God and allow Him to take care of the desire of your heart?
Lets begin by putting the horse before the cart, which is reverse of how I have seen many people live life each day. Spend time alone with the Lord; let Him teach you His version of love and romance. Then, when and if He brings you someone to walk through life with, then together you can seek Him every day. If you have been married awhile, dont overlook this devotional as it just might rekindle what has been snuffed out by daily life in a broken world.
