When they got out and started running, they were both shot. Lije barely survived, but Kaitlyn did not.
Deputy Mikki Stuart was making her rounds about 11pm. Almost hidden from sight, she saw a Ford Explorer. She didnt see anyone around, so she called in to report the abandoned vehicle. She told the dispatcher it looked like the one belonging to Lije and Kaitlyn. She checked inside the SUV and saw a purse on the front seat, and a briefcase on the floor. The key was still in the ignition. Having the feeling that something was wrong, she looked around the area. She came across the body of Kaitlyn and told the dispatcher to send an emergency crew. When they arrived, they found the body of Lije. He was not breathing, but was still warm. The EMT used the defibrillator, but it took three times before Lije started breathing. The emergency crew took Lije to the hospital. Mikki stayed at the scene wondering what happened.
The next day, the Arkansas Bureau of Investigation arrived on the scene. Because of the heavy rain, there were no clues to find. Mikkis squad car was still there, but she was missing.
This book has a lot of twists and turns as Lije and the police try to find answers. I really enjoyed reading this book, as it was a true suspense. There were no forced romantic relationships that some authors like to include. This was very refreshing for me. This is the first book in the two-part Lije Evans mystery series.
