Laura Harris Smith, Certified Nutritional Counselor, has written a thoroughly cleansing read, no pun intended. This book combines a safe, not radical dietary detox combined with spiritual insight. The author lays out a 30 day plan which includes specific scriptures and prayers for each day as well as a meal plan.

Ms. Smith speaks from her own experience in writing this book. She was raised eating homegrown vegetables and fruits. She did not grow up on processed foods. Her father always told her to "eat the rainbow" of vegetables and fruits. She tells her story of having children and in her busy life, she more and more chose processed foods. The foods that are in "boxes, bags or cans that sit in the middle of your grocery store." "Dead food" as opposed living foods which line the walls of the store. She advises that if we would eat more of these foods, mainly produce, meats and dairy, we would be healthier.

She found herself in the habit of not getting enough sleep, eating poorly, not exercising and not being well. She accumulated a sleep deficit that landed her on the brink of adrenal failure. She was dabbling at good health, not making it a priority. This describes many of us; we keep going with lack of sleep, fast food, less exercise than we should and being basically not well as our "new normal."

The author has outlined a way for us to change all of that with a change to the way we look at food and our health in general. In this book she outlines a 30-day plan to detox safely and sanely which will put us on the right path to physical and spiritual health. Have you ever thought you really need to get some exercise, make wiser choices for dinner, and read your Bible more? This plan will start new habits for you that will last a lifetime.

The plan is radical, I don't deny that. But it is so worth the 30-day focus on your mental, spiritual and physical health that I urge you to give this an honest effort. I feel certain you will not be sorry.

The book is divided into sections titles like Health-Related Toxins, Relationship Toxins, Financial Toxins. Each day is detailed with spiritual toxins, corresponding emotional toxins and a correlating physical detox. Specific internal organs are cleansed with each day's food. She lists what to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner with a mid-morning juice or smoothie and an afternoon snack, ending the day with a nightcap (a healthy one!) Laura also advises that if you have activities and obligations coming up such as weddings, reunions, etc. that you wait for a month when you don't have a lot of obligations. She does however tell you how you can keep those commitments while on the plan, if need be. Simply put, this is a great book. The caveat is this; be ready to change your life if you read this book.

I give The 30-Day Faith Detox five stars!

Healthy eating, detox teas, and purposeful nutrition are all the rage. There are books, websites, videos, programs, and groups for every nuance within the spectrum of taking care of yourself. What makes this book stand out are several things.

    1. The information is presented in bite-sized chunks. After a two-chapter introduction walks you through the basic premise behind detoxification of your body's major systems, you start 30 short, easy-to-follow daily challenges. I have found other resources to be quite wordy and hard to understand, even though I have lots of experience in health care and probably know more about human anatomy and physiology than the average reader. I tend to get bogged down in the gorey details of exactly how certain nutrients work inside our bodies and what some common toxin does to each of my systems on the cellular level. Just give it to me straight and in everyday language, or you've lost me. The 30-Day Faith Detox is a straight shooter, getting right to the point and then moving into the daily challenges.

    2. The premise of the book is a holistic approach to healthy living. The author explains early on how the connection between our minds, our bodies, and our spirits leads to poor health in one or more of these areas when they are not properly cared for. Each day begins with a spiritual toxin and the corresponding emotional toxins. After an explanation of common things that we know cause us harm but probably don't notice or think about normally, we are presented with the cleansing diet for that day and a short explanation of how it works in our bodies. So while you are working through what you've learned about yourself from that day's devotional section, your body is cleansing itself of built-up gunk.

    3. The plan is easy to follow. Okay, let me clarify that. If you're not ready to deal with these spiritual topics--social influence, financial, health-related, relationship, and purpose/identity toxins--then you could hit some roadblocks to moving forward. However, the author is very direct and specific in exposing danger zones and how to move past them. And since you only get one issue per day, you have time to stew a bit on each topic before moving on the next day.

    4. The recipes use ingredients you probably already have and can find in any regular grocery store. There's no need to find a specialty market or get online and order an array of products to carry out this cleanse. And when you finish the 30 days, you will have learned some new recipes and sustainable habits you can continue to use to equip your body for optimum health.

You will find accountability and encouragement through the offical Facebook group and 30 free videos as part of the faith detox challenge (code included in the book).

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

The 30-Day Faith Detox isnt what I expected. I am still unsure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. It was too wordy for me, and I felt like it made a lot of assumptions about the reader.

The 30 days is set up as a day-by-day detox. For example: Day 12s spiritual toxin: Get Rich Quick. It has a devotion style reading for that day. Then it talks about emotional toxins. Finally, the Correlating Physical Detox has to do with the reproductive system. I just dont get it. I didnt finish the book. I think it might be interesting to hear Smith speak about what she thinks, but this book format doesnt work for me. (Sorry.)

This is not a book on weight loss, yet I lost 16 pounds! I have tried to lose weight for many years, yet failed. This past New Year's Day I set my mind to get healthy, not because I wanted to look skinny, but because I wanted to be healthy. I started reading this book for the spirit, mind and body emphasis... getting my whole self healthy. Wow have I surprised myself! I have completed my 30 Day Detox, and am now on Day: Life! Through the 3o days of devotions and prayer time I feel I have become more positive, and generally happier. I ordered the book for a friend, and am going to reread the book with her. The meal plans are easy to follow, grocery lists are even included in each section, and I have enjoyed learning how certain colors/fruits & vegetables effect certain body organs and systems. As an added bonus my heartburn has disappeared and I am learning how to be a healthy person inside and out!

My husband and I just completed the The 30-Day Faith Detox by Laura Harris Smith. I would highly recommend this easy-to-follow plan for anyone who is interested in feeling better physically, mentally, and or spiritually. While I have read many books on nutrition and faith, this is the most concise and comprehensive book Ive read on the two. Laura speaks on these things in a harmonious, personal, and practical mannerand in fact, she supports, prays for, and encourages you along the way via email and specially designated Facebook support groups! She has also made a series of motivational videos that are available free of chargethat show you how to make some of the recipesand more importantly, motivate you to keep going because shes literally journeying right along with youfrom her own kitchen! I watched my (previously bread, sugar, dairy loving) husband lose 23lbs in the last 30 days AND get excited about maintaining a lifestyle of healthy eating!!! I was able to give up my daily coffee habit, and more than survivebut THRIVE! This process also got me cooking outside of the box and pushed me to creatively explore with some fruits and veggies I had previously never given the time of day! We have three little kids, seven and under, and even they were excited to try our smoothies and freshly made juices! The best (and most practical part) about all of this, is that Laura is not out to profit here. There are no mysterious products or ingredients you are required to buy in order to live this way for life. All items come from your own kitchen and grocery stores in your area. She basically provides the framework for God-ordained, healthy eatingthat you can live out as long as you choose. And better yet, she speaks from personal experience with this plan and how it all started by producing change in her own life. In addition to the amazing physical results, I gleaned much from the spiritual toxins that are addressed in this scripture-packed book. Laura does a nice job of addressing issues weve all dealt with or will deal with in lifeand shows us how to be free of these things through the lens of Biblical truth. Each section is also filled with prayers that we can personalize and speak directly to the heart of the Father concerning these issues. It is His desire to see us set freebecause He already paid the price for our freedom! This book is a catalyst in helping us see thatin relation to the very tangible aspects of everyday life. If you want to press the RESET button on your body, mind, and spiritthen I implore you to order this book now and get started! You will be so glad that you did! Bless you as you journey! ~Susan
