Have you ever had a personal and professional disaster so large that you couldnt ever imagine recovering from it? Well welcome to Lauren Summers life. Hollywood and the fashion industry are savage and unforgiving when it comes to wardrobe malfunctions and when the brightest innocent starlet of the moment suffers such a humiliation as she receives an award the backfire Lauren receives as the gowns designer ends in the stunning silence of a two line text message as her boss fires her minutes later.
Blackballed from designing again in respectable circles Lauren finds a little job making costumes for a private high schools theatre company and takes up residence in a run-down cottage in a secretive gated community- and tries to reassemble the remainders of her heart and her dreams.
Living in the gated community offers privacy, but isnt without its challenges. The imposing figure of Charlotte Montgomery- a former starlet of another era looms large at the end of the lane. As time goes on it becomes clear to Lauren that Charlotte isnt just an old woman with a prickly exterior- but is someone who has had her own personal disastersthat she is still running from.
Can common threads knit them together and bring about healing for them both?
If you are someone who knows me at all you know that I love classic film, and that I love historical costuming! What a treat is was to have the two laid out like a buffet throughout this book! Katherine Cushman paid attention to all the fine details of both the classic era of old Hollywood film, and to its signature luscious couture and created a book that is full of delicious descriptions! It was loads of fun for me to read about the gowns and costumes that Lauren was working on and every detail was vivid making me wish for a fairy godmother to bless me with someone to create such lovely things for me! ;)
Fading Starlight is not all about the dresses though its about the people that surround them. Miss Montgomery is a hurting woman with a bitter past that has taken more than her social standing- it took her will for living life and soured her on any who have dared to cross her path.
Lauren herself faces a crossroads as she looks at her own disappointments and decides what to do with the rest of her life. I liked that Lauren was so real in this story. She feels all that she is going through and feels it deeply, but she is also looking to God, and consistently and willingly seeks out the counsel and guidance of her second mother Rhondas wisdom. The cast of secondary characters from Laurens best friend Chloe, to Miss Montgomerys housekeeper Frances, to the handy-man Cody are all important and delightful additions to Laurens life and story and I couldnt help but like them!
One little thing that I liked was that this isnt a romance story. While Chloe does her best to hook Lauren up with Cody and start something brewing Lauren recognizes that her life is in a bit of a shambles right now and is focused on getting herself where she needs to be personally before she begins any romance. I appreciated that perspective.
I highly recommend this book and enjoyed to so much! I will look for other titles from Ms. Cushman in the future!
I have been given a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and opinion of the product.
MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: Female4 Stars Out Of 5A Story to savorSeptember 19, 2016MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Although Im not into fashion, I quickly discovered that this novel delves much deeper than the main characters career as a dress designer. The heart-touching story and the struggling characters drew me in, and I didnt want them to leave with the last page. I like they way Lauren faced her personal tragedy and didnt let it stop her from reaching out to others. The plot twists made the tale more fun and kept up the suspense. I think any woman would enjoy this book. The author is a fine writer, with another great offering here, which I received in exchange for an honest review.
Wife, Then Mama5 Stars Out Of 5Good BookAugust 13, 2016Wife, Then MamaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Fading Starlight is a creative novel. Throughout the book a number of things could have gone in a few different directions, so while it wasn't a suspenseful read, it was intriguing.
There is one flaw in this book: The event that spurs all of the activity is kind of unbelievable. It is hard to believe that a wardrobe malfunction would come back so hard. If you can suspend your disbelief (which I can), it is a really good read.
The setting for the book is creative, the descriptions of the clothing and homes is perfect: a good amount of detail without getting boring. Although it was set in modern times, we do get some interesting flashbacks to Old Hollywood. Like in a number of books I have been reading, it has some very strong scripture throughout, and the characters are very influenced by their faith.
I received this book free of charge in exchange for giving an honest review.
Karla5 Stars Out Of 5Weathering the Storms of LIfeJune 24, 2016KarlaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Lauren is a beautiful, young woman who puts herself in hiding. Her fantastic fashion house internship came to a shocking and abrupt, horrific end. Instead of launching her career, an accident on the red carpet is unjustly blamed on Lauren's work, which is deemed careless, full of errors. This is a total surprise to this caring woman who has done her best in all of her work. Blackballed , due to lies of an uncaring, cruel star, Lauren struggles to find a place in which to hide and work through her challenges, on her own, depending on no one but herself and her faith. Seeking answers, she settles in a rundown cottage, with a lowpaying job. Hiding in the shadows of a cliff side mansion, she discovers what one can see is not always the whole story. Planning to live on savings until she figures out what will come next in her life, Lauren is totally unprepared to be contacted by a reporter who says she wants to help her uncover the truth about her accusations as a fashion designer, totally unaware of the reporter's real motives.
The events that follow keep the reader totally engrossed . The only negative opinion that I have about this novel is that I did not want it to end!! The characters were described in such a realistic, detailed fashion that I at once was able to identify with them. I felt every hurt, challenge, worry and fear and rejoiced with them in any successes that were won. Lauren's difficult journey in her life and careeer became part of me. This book is a story of a very persistent, young woman who even though her life is in crisis mode, and she is questioning her faith in this path of false accusations, presents us with alternative ways to deal with troubles. That is, other that striking back!! It is truly a story of faith.
The plot is packed full of unexpected twists and turns, all intertwining to make this a winning book! It is a beautiful , tender, yet compelling tale of faith, friendship and new beginnings. Lauren struggles throughout with ethical issues, that many of us encounter , however deals with them in unusually kind, thoughtful ways. She can not repair her problems by herself, and is receptive to God's plan for her life. It is not always what we expect , but she pays back bitterness and evil with kindness to others.
I absolutely loved the details of fashion design that were at the core of this story. It was truly an education in that, as well as in old time Hollywood stars, and the history of films. God's plan for our life is not always laid out as we imagine. Lauren is the perfect example of how one can turn evil hurtful experiences into a valuable learning tool to help others who are hurting.
Definitely a five star book!! Don't miss it!!

Bookworm4vr4 Stars Out Of 5A Nice Delightful Story of Gaining Strength in God in Tough TimesJune 20, 2016Bookworm4vrQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book was very good. I need to first mention that I got this book free through Bethany House Publishers for an honest review.
At first I wasn't too interested and thought the book was going to be a drag. It took a few chapters to get involved but it was a great book. I like Lauren Summers and her attitude and how she handle her issues. God was involved in this Christian fiction but it was more subtle and like how faith is in many people's lives. They live it and don't need to talk about it. It is shown through their actions, just as what Lauren did for Miss Montgomery. Miss Montgomery and her shared many of the same feelings and similar lives, as you will see, and Lauren is a little spark for this older woman.
I recommended picking up this book and give it a chance. It was good if you stuck to it and had a great message.
