Publisher's Description
▼▲Gods extraordinary grace is hard to graspbut made easier to understand through stories of Gods people.
Gary Chapman and Chris Fabry search the Scriptures for examples of Gods grace in the lives of those named in Jesus lineage, but what they find are people with faults, foibles, and sins, just like the rest of us. So obviously, grace is not about doing everything exactly right. It is a gift . . . an astonishing gift given by God.
In Extraordinary Grace, you will hear the call of grace; laugh because of grace; apply grace; be overtaken by grace; and know the extraordinary grace that comes from loving Jesus.
Chapter studies, for individuals or groups, will help you to find examples of extraordinary grace reflected in the lineage of Jesus.

Editorial Reviews
▼▲I've read many books regarding 'Grace', but this one truly touched my heart.
Although I was not sure about the concept of exploring 'Grace' through the "Lineage of Christ", I realized that 'Grace' is for everyone. I had not thought about some of the individuals listed in his genealogy, but it was a collection of the good and the not-so-good and shows how everyone can be used by God. It was through the unlikely ones in the lineage that I understood that God's grace is for all and that all can be used.
I also appreciated the three sections: Receiving, Possessing and Extending God's Grace. I had never really taken into consideration the extension of grace to others. "Grace Made Flesh" was a very powerful chapter that truly opened my heart to Grace. The book is easy to read and very enjoyable as well as being a great teaching tool.

Extraordinary Grace: How the Unlikely Lineage of Jesus Reveals Gods Amazing Love by Gary Chapman and Chris Fabry (Moody, 2013) is very different from the previous book, but no less edifying. The book is, according to the authors "a study of God at work among ordinary people." It is an exploration into seven characters in the genealogy of Jesus. It brings OT figures like Abraham and Rahab to life with descriptive prose and imaginative descriptions of their thoughts and emotions. These are characters who "failed, fell or chose badly."
The effect of the grace of God in the lives of these Bible characters, we are told, is not that we will be compelled to please God with a holy life but that we allow the holy life of Jesus to live in and through us. This allows us to become an agent of grace to others.
Chapman and Fabry tell these stories to remind us that it is only by Gods grace that we are forgiven and accepted. Rating 4 out of 5.

The book is divided into nine chapters, each chapter focusing on a certain person;
Abram, Abraham, Rahab, Tamar, David, Bathsheba, Solomon, Joseph, and Jesus.
Each chapter starts of telling the story of whoever that chapter is focusing on. It then delves deeper into the story, showing you God's wonderful ways.
Gary and Chris take you through the bible and they paint you a beautiful picture of how God picks up the broken and unworthy only to shower them with grace.
The narrative flows wonderfully, and with 165 pages (including the study guide), this book can easily be finished in a few sittings. An enjoyable read for new believers and long time believers. I definitely wasn't disappointed in this book!
Without grace we are lost, and as the authors put it; Grace=God's Riches At Christ's Expense.

I have been a big fan of Gary Chapman since reading his famous book, The Five Love Languages. So I was excited for this book and had high expectations.
Gary indicates that the purpose of this book is to encourage anyone that might be struggling with not feeling worthy of Gods love, redemption, and mercy. He is clear from the very beginning that God is not looking for flawless servants. Rather, he is looking for those who need his extraordinary grace.
The core of the book focuses on the lives of four patriarchs and three matriarchs of Jesus lineage. Each chapter outlines a specific characters life, flaws, acceptance of Gods forgiveness and grace, and the subsequent power they received from Him. A few of the characters include Abraham, Rehab, David, and Solomon. Gary does an excellent job of detailing each situation the sin, the unworthiness through biblical references. The most pertinent portion of each chapter is the result of Gods grace when accepted and applied by the characters.
A nugget of truth that stuck: GRACE = Gods Riches At Christs Expense.
I believe anyone would be encouraged to read this book. Its confirmation that God chooses the broken and unworthy to reveal Himself and bestow his grace upon them. He also includes practical applications through each character recollection. I find this important as the cultural differences are significant and difficult to decipher.
Chapman also includes a study guide in the back of the book to be used by individuals or groups.

It selects nine men and women, each of which contributes to our understanding of grace, and outlines their story and examines the result that grace had on their lives.
Some books attempt to present a theology of grace. This book gives a dramatic look at how God's grace is lived out in the lives of His people. Each chapter not only tells the character's story, but also includes clear statement of the lessons of the chapter apply to life of modern believer. The book ends with a selection of Bible Studies suitable for use by an individual or group as they learn about God's grace. I thoroughly enjoyed the mixture of text, application, and Bible Study - it makes this book very practical in a number of situations.
My biggest concern is the inconsistent use of Scripture references throughout the book. Some references are included in the body of the text, others are included in notes located at the end of the book. Given the inconsistent use of references, it is difficult to tell whether all scripture references are cited correctly. It appears that the final copy of the book will include a significant amount of artwork to accompany the text; however, other than the insertion of some blank picture frames, the artwork was not included in my review copy.
