Publisher's Description

This is a completely revised edition of Gold Medallion Award-winning Expositor’s Bible Commentary. This revised commentary has undergone substantial revisions that keep pace with current evangelical scholarship and resources. Just as its previous edition, it offers a major contribution to the study and understanding of the Scriptures. Providing pastors and Bible students with a comprehensive and scholarly tool for the exposition of the Scriptures and the teaching and proclamation of the gospel, this ten-volume reference work has become a staple of seminary and college libraries and pastors’ studies worldwide. Its fifty-six contributors—thirty of them are new—represent the best in evangelical scholarship committed to the divine inspiration, complete trustworthiness, and full authority of the Bible. As before, The Expositor’s Bible Commentary features full NIV text, but also refers freely to other translations and to the original languages. In addition to its exposition, each book of the Bible has an introduction, outline, and an updated bibliography. Notes on textual questions and special problems are correlated with the expository units; transliteration and translation of Semitic and Greek words make the more technical notes accessible to readers unacquainted with the biblical languages. In matters where marked differences of opinion exist, commentators, while stating their own convictions, deal fairly and irenically with opposing views.

The quality revision of the beloved Expositors Bible Commentary succeeds again here in volume 6 covering Proverbs through Isaiah. For the record, Im glad Ross and Grogan were retained to revise Proverbs and Isaiah respectively, as I always enjoyed them in the old set. This revision ensures another generation of pastors will use EBC as a primary resource.

In Proverbs, the Introduction and outline are little changed and the exceptional topical index was retained. The commentary is simply one of the best on Proverbs today. Frankly, I always check what Ross has to say when working in Proverbs.

In Ecclesiastes J. Stanford Wright is replaced by Jerry Shepherd. Though the scholarship is improved, and the writing clear, his interpretation follows the currently popular pessimistic approach. Though I couldnt agree with that approach, the work is helpful.

George Schwab replaces Dennis Kinlaw in an improved effort for the Song of Songs. Its really outstanding. He gives an incredibly succinct summary of approaches to the book. Since pastors rarely preach on the Song, this may be all some pastors want.

Grogan has brought Isaiah up to date with current scholarship and this commentary will hold its status as one of the best in the middle-length category. I really love it! Conservative, clear, and helpfulwhat more could you ask for?

Quality commentary on four biblical books (and one of those books is the longer, important Book of Isaiah) between two covers at a decent price is not something you can find just anywhere. Id especially recommend this volume to busy pastors and teachers. You will be helped by it.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commissions 16 CFR, Part 255.
