    Co-op Disappointment

I am the director of a co-op where we have used the Apologia science books for years. We decided to buy these brand new books this year as it had become difficult to purchase the lab books for the previous edition. Unfortunately, we will not be able to use these books again in our future classes as the books are poorly written and designed. There were pages and pages of corrections in all three books which is ridiculous for a book of this price range. In addition, questions on the tests weren't even addressed in the chapters. We all spent way too much extra time scouring through chapters to finally discover that the answers were just not there. Many of the concepts were very difficult to understand even for our high school students. We all managed to finish the book, but I can say that the kids and teacher were very turned off and extremely frustrated by the end of the year.

We are pressing on but if I had my way we would have burned these books long ago. I cant even begin to describe how hard this book is to follow. My son has been a trooper this year. We are in Module 11 right now, so I can safely say, that I will not be returning to Apologia because of this book.

My biggest complaint is that when I go to correct my son's work, he will have an answer that, according to the book, is wrong. But, we will sit and look through the book together, digging for the answers and not be able to find the right answer to the question. This has happened in every single module, on nearly every single lesson. My poor son, who used to love science, now says he hates it. This is the worst curriculum I have ever used, and I cannot wait to be done with it forever. (we have to press on because he is getting high school credit for it through a charter school)

i love the idea of this curriculum and the focus on studying the world from a biblical worldview. the writer and teacher both love science and our God, major plus and the reason we chose it. however, this curriculum is not able to be used as self guided for our 8th grade student. i'm not even sure it would be do-able as a freshmen. i as the parent am constantly struggling as i try to help my e8th grader. this material needs an in-house teacher, in our opinion. i'm all for challenging, but as an adult this is a mountain that does not seem climbable without a great deal of help. sorry apologia, i wanted to love this. we have even tried the online video class resources. i've emailed apologia and they did provide some suggestions, but it just wasn't enough in order for our student to succeed. i'm still looking for an alternative because finishing out the year with this is just not going to work. we've done 4 modules (the only successful module completed was the first one) with all of them ending in tears (3 of the modules we've redone twice). i wish we had a better experience.

Do not waste money on this

    2nd child through Apologia
I bought the 2nd edition of apologia physical science with Dr. wile for my oldest child and it was beneficial. Due to changes in our coop, I purchased the 3rd edition for my second child (2 years difference). Older child did well and understood concepts taught in 2nd edition. Second child, after reading each module 2 times, continues to stuggle, eventhough 2nd child is more science and math minded. We hate this curriculum and will no longer purchase anything apologia. Chemistry is instruction is poor considering this is the introduction for students. Eventhough our coop strictly uses apologia for science through 12th grade, we will not continue to use apologia. We will not waste money to update to next editions for Biology, Chemistry, etc.

I welcomed the content update. The text is visually appealing and delivers the content in a readable way as in the previous edition. I was just really disappointed that they made it a soft cover. (I knew it was paperback from the product description. I was just hoping it was hardback like the new General Science text.)I purchased it for me to teach in our homeschool co-op. We'll see how it holds up....
