Product Description

Give your student a firm understanding of the basics of chemistry with Apologia's Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 3rd Edition. Sixteen modules cover measurement & units, atoms & molecules, atomic structure, molecular structure, polyatomic ions and molecular geometry, stoichiometry, acid-base chemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, and more.

Experiments are designed for home-use, though some more "specialized" equipment is required; they include measuring specific heat, discovering the electrical conductivity of compounds dissolved in water, measuring the width of a molecule, exploring freezing point depression, using the ideal gas equation, recognizing the effects of catalysts, and more.

Lessons integrate "on your own" questions to check for review and comprehension throughout the lesson, as well as examples, tables, and images where helpful. Modules end with a "study guide" that includes review questions and practice questions, along with answers to the "on your own" questions.

Each of the 16 modules should take students approximately 2 weeks to complete at 1 hour of study per day at a minimum; the course itself should take 32 weeks to complete.

This revised 3rd edition features more in-depth discussions and explanations of concepts along with biographical sketches of Christian artists. List of needed lab supplies included. Scripture taken from the ESV. Recommended for 10th Grade.

The included softcover solutions manual contains answers to the module practice problems, extra practice problems, review questions, and includes both the tests and test answers. The tests booklet contain the same tests that are in the solutions manual, but are presented in pe rforated-booklet format to make them easy to tear out and give to students.

This kit includes:

  • Exploring Creation with Chemistry Textbook, 651 pages, indexed with glossary, hardcover. 3rd Edition

  • Solutions & Tests for Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 3rd Edition
  • Test Booklet for Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 3rd Edition

Prerequisites: Students must be proficient at an Algebra math level. Grade 10.

This is currently the 4th printing of the 3rd edition.

Very disappointed!!. We have used the older editions of this book without issue. We upgraded this year for current 10th grader and am very sorry I did!! The information is not presented in a coherent way, the author tells you all about stuff that she then tells you you don't need to know, gives all kinds of exceptions to rules without explaining rules, and includes tables that are more confusing than her text. I have a Bio-Chem degree and though it has been a few years since I was in college, I could not explain the included tables and charts. I would just explain what my student should know. We are switching texts in the middle of the year back to Dr. Wile.

The Apologia Chemistry 3rd Edition textbook and solutions manual claims to be "new and improved." I found it tired and lacking. Much of the book is just a rehash of the old 2nd Edition with some minor style fixes and some sequencing variations. Colorful pages and fancy backgrounds do not make a good textbook; in fact, they distract from it. What is really bad about this book is all the errors contained within - and I purchased the second printing, not the first that Apologia pulled off the shelves. Additionally, when I compared the text to the College Board requirements for the national tests, many of the key concepts were missing: protein electrophoresis and basic carbon chemistry, to name two, were omitted. How this text can claim to be college preparatory when it does not meet the basic core course requirements required by the national tests is beyond me.

We have been using Apologia Science books since the kids were young and they have always been written in a way that was engaging and made the field of study interesting. This is truly a text book, the writing style was so clinical it took any amount of interest away from the material and left them with a 'to-do list' instead of an exploring and unveiling of truths.

I personally found it frustrating that they would talk of acids and bases and yet not talk of the pH levels for many chapters later. what? seems like they missed the point in some ways.

While I have appreciated Apologia for many years and will always recommend their science books, I think the title of the book is misleading, they could have called it 'Stating the Facts about Chemistry'

My son had struggled with six modules of the 2nd edition before the 3rd edition came out. We just switched to the third edition starting over on chemistry for the year. The 3rd edition is more visually appealing which makes it easier to learn. The change in format has actually made it easier for my son to read and learn the material. The new order seems to allow for the concepts to build more naturally. This edition seems better suited to the self-learning that we utilize in our home school and will not require the lectures that the 2nd edition did. The solution key is easier to understand and does not confuse his chemistry major mom. The tests have also been rewritten and now have multiple choice questions along with short answers and problem solving which provide a more complete test for the material covered in the module and a better measurement of the students understanding of the material.

Reserve opinion for final, not too impressed with the first 3 modules.

I teach a chemistry class to homeschoolers using the second edition. I like the second edition for the most part and feel it really prepares the students for college level chemistry. For this edition, it looks like they re-ordered the chapters, added some color, but didn't really change the text except to add some 'forced' God items. I am a very solid believer, but I feel science speaks so loudly of our creator God that I don't understand why we have to 'force' it into the textbooks. I'll still look over the rest of the book, but I'm not sure I will be jumping to switch texts next year. I didn't check the math on the problems as Doctormom did. I'll wait for the whole text to do that. More to follow when the whole book is available.
