Since the book is HUGE, I put different two color tabs on ALL THE MODULES to find them more easily. I also bought the book for myself and put DIFFERENT color tabs on mine to differentiate. THAT was the first needed item.Secondly,I AGREE with another reviewer that the book SHOULD BE HARDCOVER!! This ATTEMPT OF APOLOGIA in saving money is RIDICULOUS!!!!! HOW MANY TIMES will I have to strengthen the book to make it last the year ?! SHAME ON YOU,APOLOGIA!!!! I do not recommend this book in softcover form to anyone. Don't you realize, Apologia, that people expect to pay for a hardback in this subject matter???Curriculum matter is as another reviewer said ~Honors type course~although this will help my child who aspires to be a vet.

As a science teacher the content of this book is good. It is a bit challenging for students to pick out the important concepts because too much detail is given for a high school level biology class. I would not recommend the test booklet. The test do not accurately test the students knowledge and the study guides do not prepare them for the test. One of the tests asks a question that is derived from a caption of a picture. If the information is so important that it should be on the test it should get more space in the chapter for discussion.

Things you might want to consider if you are choosing this text

I taught Apologia Biology in a private Christian school setting this last year. I wanted to share input for those of you considering using this program. First, the author is knowledgeable and accurate and up to date on the information presented. Her explanations of the information are clear, but she does do a depth beyond basic Biology in my opinion. The text is around 750 pages so it is very thorough . I am a Biology major and have taught for many years. I would consider this an Honors Level Biology...not AP, but quite thorough. It would be a good match for someone going on into a science field in college. It might be more than is needed for someone wanting to learn basic Biology. The 2020 March printing I taught from is a first printing. As with all first printings, there are some formatting errors that hopefully will be corrected in subsequent printings. Please note that you can contact the publisher for an Errata listing they will email to you. There are also Alternative tests available if you email them. The Alternative tests seem a bit more straightforward and easier than the ones including in the testing manual. I thought the labs were good and added understanding to the topics in the various modules. The soft cover text is heavy, but I did put clear contact over it about halfway through the year...same with my students and that kept the cover from tearing. When you add the Student Notebook also, it is a lot of material to carry. I did have my students purchase the Notebook this first time around. We cut the binding off with the aid of a a machine that does that and then put the pages in a three ring notebook. This allowed me to have students hand in completed paperwork for grading at the end of each module . I can see that the Notebook would be helpful for some students, but I probably would not use it if I taught the class again. One thing that was a bit tricky in the Notebook is the Module questions are the first half of the pages and the labs are the second half. I would prefer for the labs to follow the module questions to reduce the confusion of searching for the right pages. I thought the author did a great job adding comments reflecting on the Christian view and applications to the topics. I had only 28 weeks to cover this course that was planned for 36 weeks so it was a push. I have another friend who is teaching this and she had to spread the topics over two years of study. There is a lot in this text and again, it is not basic Biology but is a bit more advanced. So, determine your need and that will help you decide if this is a good match for you or not.

It is really disappointing that Apologia went with a softcover for this book. It is a huge book and difficult to hold because the soft cover gives under the weight. My copy was already damaged via shipping and I am confident it will not make through the first year . Which is too bad because I love Apologia . The rest looks amazing and very typical of the high standard of Apologia. I am gonna contact the company to find out if they are going to have a hard cover version.
