Among important books in the defense of Christianity, this one has few equals. Evidence That Demands a Verdict is an easy-to-read, front-line defense for Christians facing the tough questions of critics and skeptics. Using secular evidences and other historical sources, Josh McDowell's faith-building book is a "must read" for every Christian.
As a young man, Josh McDowell considered himself an agnostic. He truly believed that Christianity was worthless. However, when challenged to intellectually examine the claims of Christianity, Josh discovered compelling and overwhelming evidence for the reliability of the Christian faith. After trusting in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, Joshs life changed dramatically as he experienced the power of Gods love. After his conversion, Josh committed his life to telling a doubting world about the truth of Jesus Christ. After studying at Kellogg College, Josh completed his college degree at Wheaton College and then attended Talbot Theological Seminary, graduating magna cum laude with a Masters of Divinity. Working with Campus Crusade for Christ and founding the youth outreach, Josh McDowell Ministry, Josh has shared the gospel with more than 25 million people in 125 countries. He is the author or co-authored of 147 books.
Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Highly recommend this solid resourceJanuary 15, 2018Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"Evidence That Demands a Verdict" is a collection of evidence that helps believers have confidence and unbelievers see that there is a reasoned, factual basis to Christianity. I've owned previous editions of this book, the latest being the 1999 version. This book has been updated to include the latest discoveries and arguments as well as commentary at the beginning from Sean McDowell. While much of the core evidence is the same, there has been some rewriting and changes made as the new information was added. Even if you've read the previous versions, it's worth getting this version for the new material. I'd highly recommend this as a great reference resource (for looking up information that interests you) or to read through from start to finish.
The book covered why we believe that there is a god (evidence for theism), ways that the Bible is unique from other books, how the Bible was written, manuscript and archeological evidence that the New and Old Testaments are accurate, how the text of the Bible was copied by scribes and how accurate they were, information about the Gnostic gospels and other texts that were not included in the Bible and why they weren't included. Christian and non-Christian sources and archeological discoveries that support the existence of Jesus, examining Jesus' claims to deity and does that make him lord, liar, or lunatic. Old Testament prophecies that Jesus fulfilled, evidence for Jesus' literal, bodily resurrection, and why the apostles were willing to die. How the Old Testament and ancient near eastern texts are similar but also strikingly different, evidence for the historical reliability of Genesis (Adam and Eve, the patriarchs), Exodus, the conquest, the united monarchy, the divided monarchy, the exilic period, and other books of the Old Testament (Pentateuch, Isaiah, Daniel). Some alleged contradictions in the Bible and how they can be harmonized. Why truth matters, can you know the truth, answering skeptics, are miracles possible, and many other topics.

Dr DaveCasa Grande, AZAge: 55-65Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5More Evidence Than EverDecember 1, 2017Dr DaveCasa Grande, AZAge: 55-65Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Do you remember 1972? If you do, theres an excellent chance you are in possession of an AARP Card. I dont remember what the publishing world in general was up to, but in Christian circles it was Evidence That Demands a Verdict a volume that eventually became a classic and the go-to volume for Christian apologetics. Over the past forty-five years it has been added to, updated, expanded and improved.
Now in 2017 Thomas Nelson has published the latest. This time it is billed as The Completely Updated and Expanded Classic. The official title is Evidence That Demands a Verdict: Life-Changing Truth for a Skeptical World. This new version is authored by the original author Josh McDowell and his son Sean McDowell, PhD.
And updated and expanded it is! This version is completely redone. After some lengthy front matter (Be sure to read Josh McDowells testimony He Changed My Life.), the volume is arranged in four parts: Part I: Evidence for the Bible, Part II: Evidence for Jesus, Part III: Evidence for the Old Testament, and Part IV: Evidence for Truth. Parts I and II contain much of the former material with some additions. However, it is Part III that contains a great deal of new material. There are thirteen chapters dealing with the validity of the Old Testament. Part IV is philosophical yet forms the basis for any apologetic undertaking.
The major structural update youll find is the format. Gone is the heavy outline format in favor of a more moderate one. A distinct change in that it allows the reader to consume paragraphs under a particular subject heading. In short, it is just more readable.
This is a must volume for any believer with even the slightest interest in the soundness of the Christian faith. If you have volumes 1 & 2 and are familiar with referring to them, I would recommend keeping them right beside this one. This would make the ideal Christmas gift for a pastor or seminary student (about $20 on Amazon). Get this into your library!

Nancy5 Stars Out Of 5New Edition Evidence Demands a VerdictOctober 9, 2017NancyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The new Evidence Demands a Verdict is an amazing book. It helps young, old, families, singles defend their Christian faith. It is well written. It covers the many , many issues we are faced with in our world today. Here are some of the issues: How can we know heaven exists, how could loving God send a good person to hell?, Is hell a divine torture chamber, what is the moral argument for the existence of God, does truth even matter, how can I know I am save, were some books left out of the Bible, what about those who have never heard of Jesus? What not read this amazing book so you are ready to handle any confrontations you will have with your faith?
Homeeducator4 Stars Out Of 5Have doubts about the validity of the Bible? Here is the evidence to convince you!October 4, 2017HomeeducatorQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4"Evidence That Demands a Verdict" is a scholarly book and not for the faint of heart. This 798 page resource includes a lengthy introduction regarding the topic of apologetics and the Christian faith, as well as a prologue discussing "The Role of Presuppositions," the definition of "Naturalism," and "Evidence for Theism." After these first seventy-four pages you enter the meat of the book which presents "Evidence for the Bible," "Evidence for Jesus," "Evidence for the Old Testament," and "Evidence for Truth" in thirty-two total chapters..
In today's culture, having answers for commonly asked questions regarding Christianity is crucial to carrying on intelligent conversations. "Evidence That Demands a Verdict" provides so much evidence to back up those answers. For example, a topic that is frequently debated is an "Historical Adam". Chapter 17 is devoted to discussing that debate as well as providing "Evidence from the Bible and Jewish Texts for Adam and His Family," "Evidence from Science for Adam and His Family," and "Literary and Linguistic Evidence for Adam and His Family." Various sources are cited in this fascinating chapter and throughout the whole book. "Evidence That Demands a Verdict" is definitely not a fictional book written by two scholars. Instead, arguments are defined and answered from a myriad of international sources.
I will admit that I have yet to completely read this book as it is quite in-depth and takes a lot of concentration to plow through the many long quotes and scientific terms. Although I highly recommend this book to Christians who wish to strengthen the defense of their faith, as well as to scholarly types who are investigating Christianity, it is not a book for the everyday person. I will continue to read it as I have time, but it will be most useful to me as a resource when I need to defend my faith. This book would be an excellent one to open up and read and discuss with an academically-minded friend over a strong cup of tea! But my teenagers and husband are not going to choose to read it in their spare time.
My rating reflects the college - or higher - reading level of the text, indicating that it will be a difficult read for most people. However, the quality of the information presented gives it a strong 4-star rating. #TrueEvidence
