Product Description

For the average Christian who longs to share their faith effectively but doesn't know where to begin, Every Believer Confident is the ultimate guidebook.

All believers are called to make disciples and “give an answer” when objections are raised against the faith. Most Christians want to share and defend their beliefs, but they often feel ill-equipped. They desire to reach friends, family, coworkers, and classmates with the good news of Jesus Christ but lack confidence and skill. They want to be like Jesus and effectively engage the lost with the powerful truth of the gospel. They just don't know how.

What's needed is a way to simplify apologetics and make it accessible to the average church member who will never study philosophy or science. If every church member was indeed a skilled evangelist, churches would not have to depend on come-and-see events to reach the community, because every member would be practicing the go-and-tell approach Scripture assumes.

Every Believer Confident: Apologetics for the Ordinary Christian simplifies the basic principles of apologetics and provides effective strategies for use in actual encounters with unbelievers. It provides a structure whereby any Christian can engage anyone they meet, move the conversation to spiritual matters, answer objections raised against the Christian faith, and present the gospel of Christ in all its glory and rationality.

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am Professor of Apologetics at Lancaster Bible College and Capital Seminary in Lancaster, PA. I have been teaching apologetics in local churches for almost fifteen years, in addition to almost twenty years of teaching apologetics and systematic theology at the graduate and undergraduate levels. I began my ministry career as a senior pastor in New London in my home state of Connecticut. I received my PhD in Apologetics from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and ThM in New Testament from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in S. Hamilton, Massachusetts. I have been married to Adrienne for more than 30 years, and we have three married children and three grandchildren.

What was your motivation behind this project?  As I began to learn apologetics more than 20 years ago I was both encouraged that there were good answers available, but also discouraged that actually using these answers seemed too hard. I came to learn that God has called every Christian to share and defend their faith confidently and effectively (1 Peter 3:15-16). While most apologetics resources provide excellent tools to do so, they don't do a good job of showing ordinary, average Christians how to use them. As a result, many Christians gather excellent tools that they don't know how to utilize. When I learned how simple the process could be I wanted to share what I had learned, and this book is the fruit of that desire.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I want believers to experience the power and encouragement of an evangelistic/apologetic approach to sharing the gospel that comes when we understand the resources God has given us. Sharing and defending the Christian faith does not require a degree in philosophy or science. Any believer can learn the basics quickly and fulfill their commission to always be prepared to give an answer when unbelievers challenge the Christian faith (1 Peter 3:15-16).

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  My attempts to share and defend the gospel have been supercharged by using some simple approaches I discuss in the book. By understanding what God says about the heart and mind of the unbeliever and how best to engage them with the truth of the gospel, I have been much more active and fruitful in my conversations with unbelievers.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  My primary influences have been Cornelius Van Til, Ravi Zacharias, Scott Oliphint, C. S. Lewis, Francis Schaeffer, Bill Edgar, Tim Keller, James White, Greg Bahnsen, Nabeel Qureshi, Nancy Pearcey, Os Guinness, and more.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  This book is designed for an ordinary Christian without a Bible degree or without much understanding of philosophy or science who simply wants to share the gospel effectively with an unsaved friend, neighbor, coworker, classmate, or family member. It moves you from the very basics up to confidence that you can encounter any unbeliever and plant seeds of the gospel in their heart.
