Author/Artist Review

Author: Kyle Douglas Henry
Submitted: October 11, 2017

Tell us a little about yourself.  Kyle Douglas Henry (born 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia) is an american illustrator. He paints in oils, in the tradition of the illustrators of the early 20th century. His work is characterized by strong, dramatic lighting, and visual story telling.  Studying art at Pensacola Christian College, Henry received his degree in Commercial Art in 1998. It was while in college, he worked as an illustrator for A Beka Book Publications. “I was so fortunate to be able to work at A Beka, the experience doubled my education.”  Today, Henry works from his studio in Northwest Arkansas, painting pictures he hopes brings inspiration to others.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I have always been inspired by the "nature" miracles of Jesus. For the most part, healing was the majority of Jesus' miracles performed, so when He showed His power over nature it was truly something to behold. I wanted to show the viewer in the boat with the fearful, and I also wanted the storm raging. The only calm and unaffected by the storm is Christ, who is also at the center of the picture. He is also looking at the viewer, as if reaching out beyond the scene to us.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope people will be moved by this picture and deepens their faith in Christ.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I was given a gift by God to be able to draw and paint. I am glad to use that to show these stories as very real and help others in their journey.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I learned from master artist Brian Jekel at Pensacola Christian College.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I'm asked a lot by folks about how they wish they could draw or paint like me. I would encourage them to never give up. Don't be discouraged. Watch less television and don't play video games and spend time drawing.
