It all began when Mark Dever wrote "Nine Marks of a Healthy Church" more than a decade ago. In subsequent years, Crossway has intermittently released a series of small volumes expanding upon those individual themes, entitled "Building Healthy Churches." Mack Stiles' "Evangelism" is one of the latest in that series. In simple and straightforward language that does not fall back upon the creation of merely another "church program," the writer defines the subject of sharing one's faith as a natural outflow of one's life in Christ. The very word "evangelism" is one that ironically strikes dread and fear in the hearts of most Christians. That is because we have tended to make it something that is "optional" and "unnatural" to Christian living. Stiles' plea is that local churches develop a "culture of evangelism" where its members approach sharing their faith as a corporate as well as individual responsibility, working together and trusting the Spirit of God. He is careful to remind us that no one comes to faith because of us, but that God chooses to use us as instruments of making the Gospel known. Those looking for a "how to" manual will not find this book to be very helpful, but for those looking for a practical approach to speaking the Gospel into the lives of others, there is much wisdom to be found here. This is probably the most practically helpful and encouraging work I have read ion this subject in several years.
