Product Description

Christians currently agree that Jesus was submissive to God the Father during his incarnation and time on earth leading to the cross. The issue at hand is whether or not Jesus the Son is eternally submissive or subordinate to the Father in terms of their relations. On one side of the debate are those who say that the Son is only subordinate in authority during his earthly ministry but is coequal both ontologically and relationally with the Father eternally. On the other side are those who claim that the Son’s obedience and submission during his earthly ministry demonstrate an eternal, voluntary submission to the Father so that the Son is always subordinate relationally while remaining fully equal with the Father ontologically.

Eternal Submission examines the eternal submission of the Son from both biblical and theological perspectives. The author surveys some of the recent trinitarian debate and engages with critics of eternal submission before setting out to provide biblical and theological support for the doctrine. The implications of this debate for theology proper and gender relationships in the church and home are also addressed. Whether you are new to the topic or a seasoned reader of the theological debate, this book will be a helpful resource.

What was your motivation behind this project?  My desire in writing this book was to move the conversation on the eternal submission of the Son back to the biblical passages that speak to the issue, and then to examine theological arguments typically used against Christ's eternal submission.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My hope is that when the biblical texts related to this issue are examined that the reader will conclude that there is and eternal element to the Son's submission to God the Father, while in no way taking away from his full equality with God.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  It is extremely challenging to think through these difficult issues related to the Triune God, and I have great respect for individuals who enter this conversation on either side of the debate. I have been forced to look carefully into the biblical text for evidence of Christ's eternal submission. Some passages that may seem clear to one side or the other might, in fact, not be so simple. It's been challenging, but wonderful, to dwell deeply on the divine nature and personal relationships within God.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  For this book I am indebted to the work of Wayne Grudem, Bruce Ware, and the late Michael Ovey.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  My primary purpose in writing about this topic is to encourage precise and biblical thinking about the Triune God.
