Tell us a little about yourself. I am a retired teacher and have been involved in Christian ministry from my early twenties. I am now in my seventies. As a believer, I have taught children and adults, have delivered sermons from the pulpit, have worked extensively with the Youth for Christ organization both locally and nationally, and have operated a youth ministry. I have a Master's degree in Counseling. I am married and have six children and six grandchildren.
What was your motivation behind this project? This book was written because the need for a clear, thorough, and easy to understand book on "eternal salvation" was requested by a local pastor. I had studied and written on this topic for many years for my own edification and I felt that I could produce what he needed. Secondly, from my studies, I became aware that there was a great deal of confusion still remaining concerning this most vital topic. My personal studies, limited to the Bible, did not correspond to what I had been hearing. This writing, fully supported from the Word was intended to present a Biblical view.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that folks will learn truth and be prepared to challenge, rather that to acquiesce to teachings that do not conform to their own reading of the Scriptures. I want people to understand that their eternal state will depend upon their personal beliefs and actions, not on the teachings or misrepresentations of others.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? This has been the most valuable experience, and one of the most painful, of my life. I have learned many truths and have made them my own- as opposed to accepting the teachings of others. I KNOW the Bible's representation of eternal salvation and have been able to develop clarity concerning many other concepts. I can hear false promises being made and know why they are false. I know when assumptions are being presented as truths. I have learned the Bible very well as I have had to check and confirm many developing thoughts and even challenges made to my own understanding by others. I have learned that retired pastors are more prepared to challenge their thinking than are active pastors. I have also learned that most people are eager to accept teachings because they offer hope through a positive outcome rather than to accept challenges to their belief system. I have learned that those teaching seminary students are not ready to consider other perspectives. I know why Christ taught that you should not put new wine in an old wine-skin. I have learned to rely on Christ for clarification of his Word and for the encouragement to continue on. I have learned of the wonderful grace and support that Christ has provided through the encouragement and prayers of others.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? This project was undertaken with the intention of being influenced ONLY by the Bible and through the Spirit. I seldom read other interpretations during the project because I did not want to be influenced by people. The question was who would you believe and who would you reject. I have found this approach to be very fruitful to the development of my own understandings.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: The Word of God becomes quite clear if a person is willing to carefully examine it and allow themselves to be led. It is not filled with disjointed ideas. People should also know that all translations of the Bible are not equal. Translations tend to be interpreted in a way that supports the understandings of the moment. People should know that God is faithful to the person who is prepared to seek and to knock.
