From the windy panhandle of Texas5 Stars Out Of 5ESV Thompson ChainMarch 12, 2018From the windy panhandle of TexasQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I , too have many Thompson Chain Study Bibles. I returned a Zondervon Study Bible due to its size, and just had so many misgivings on the NiV 2011, since I have used a Tyndale Based text for over 40 years.
The ESV TCS surpassed my expectations, The bible is of the same block size as their NIV. The paper is very good , Crossway would do well to do the same. The text is from the 2001 pre update ESV. The only thing is font size. Im sure that is due to copywrite, but it would have nicer if the font size were closer to the NKJV TCSB. Nevertheless, if you love the ESV, get this TCSB. If you want a group of seminary professors to lead you to their line of thinking, then get a doctrinal text study bible.
Kings Kid5 Stars Out Of 5Good for deeper studyJanuary 13, 2018Kings KidQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have had several of the Thompson Bibles. They are good for deeper study and letting the Holy Spirit teach you. the other study Bibles are great; this one is just as good, you just need to listen to what God is saying a little closer
Jesus girl in Wisc.5 Stars Out Of 5burgundy bonded leather ESVSeptember 16, 2017Jesus girl in Wisc.Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I know the ESV Thompson took a long time to get here. They made sure they used the 2016 Permanent text for it. Thank you for that Kirkbride. I love the Thompson Chains. . They have a beautiful history. I just want to review what I love about it. The Bible text and chain references are what you see in the beginning of this Bible. Next to the text you will see Topical guide numbers (over 8000 of them). This takes you to the back where you will find them and so much more.
When I study I like to use their Analysis of each book for just the right amount of infomation. Also you will find grafts and picture journeys of the life of Jesus and many more. The Archaeological section and beautiful color maps have all been updated in the new ESV. I just love it.
The quality of binding and even the bonded leather is incredible! Thompson has a great reputation for this.
What I absolutely love and want to share with you is how I like to mark my Bible. I like to block in a favorite verse and color it or you might say highlight it with a colored pencil. (I use Prismacolor pencils). The Thompson Bible already has the vertical lines on the page since it is double column format and all the great reference information is outside of the lines. I just carefully draw a horizonal line with a regular pencil and ruler and color in the box. There is also plenty of room on the side to journal. The font is only 8 but it is spaced nicely so it is ok. I also love the red letter.
I love this Bible and highly recommend it!
Kevin N.4 Stars Out Of 5New to Thompson Chain Reference BibleAugust 25, 2017Kevin N.Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I recently purchased the ESV Thompson Chain Reference Bible in burgundy genuine leather. Let me first say, the quality of the Bible itself is great. The genuine leather is beautiful and well constructed. The pages are a perfect thickness (not onion-skin thin, but also not too heavy). And I love the ESV translation, so glad to see the Thompson Chain available in the ESV.
I am new to the Thompson Chain Reference Bible system, but I was expecting a bit more than what I've seen so far in the reference chains. A great example of this is Ruth 2:20 where Boaz is mentioned as a redeemer. I would expect to see a chain reference to redeemer here. But none is given. As a matter of fact no chain reference to redeemer exists in the entire book of Ruth, and yet the keyword as noted in the book analysis for Ruth is Redeemer! This seems to be a bit inconsistent.
I appreciate the many hours, even years that Dr. Thompson surely invested to create his original Thompson Chain Reference Bible, but if feels as though Kirkbride could benefit by having a committee review and edit the chains to be more thorough and holistic. Also, it becomes quickly obvious that the original chains were based off the KJV. For one who primarily uses the ESV this can become distracting at times. For example, the chain reference is afflictions, and yet the ESV chooses to translate the text as grief. It would be helpful to have the chains updated to reflect the translation of the ESV text (admittedly this would be a big effort to take on).
Overall I'm excited about my purchase and look forward to diving into God's Word with a different perspective and opportunity using the chain reference system.
Shauna3 Stars Out Of 5This is NOT verse by verseAugust 21, 2017ShaunaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I've purchased Thompson Chain Bibles for myself and others for many years now. I really enjoy the ESV translation so I purchased this. While the Bible itself is terrific I was completely disappointed that it's in paragraph format instead of verse by verse. When I'm studying, taking notes & following a chain topic it's so much easier to do using the verse format. With the paragraph format I'm not even sure which verse the topic is referring to. It takes extra time to get that straight and it's distracting. I'm sending this back & getting the NASB instead. If you can study well with a paragraph format this Bible might be for you. Otherwise buyer beware.
