Jassinc65 Stars Out Of 5ESV Single Column Journaling Bible, Large Print (Summer Garden)March 16, 2017Jassinc6Quality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I had been searching for years to find a Journaling method that fit my personal needs. I've tried separate notebooks and journals and have purchased just about every Journaling Bible that has hit the market. I want to spend my time in the Word reading to connect with God and it is important to me that I can note the impressions given to me regarding particular passages, right in the margins where they apply. It was not helpful for me to have separate notebooks or journals that I never referred back to. The other Journaling Bibles I've purchased fell short of my mark because the print was too small and I focused so much on trying to "read the small text" that it impaired my ability to "hear impressions." The 9-point type font is the right size for my 65-year-old eyes and the "cream" colored paper reduces glare somewhat. I'd hate to see it "improved" with thicker paper as it would make this Bible much too heavy. In my opinion, it's excellent just as it is. I started a read-through-the-Bible-in-a-year plan with this Bible on January 1st and I am very pleased with it. So far everything I want to do during my quiet time readings is possible with this Bible. I make notations, write out impressions, note songs that come to mind and even write out special prayers when I am led to do so. I am not an artist so that isn't my focus although I doodle occasionally. I use only micron pens and colored pencils and have no bleed-through. Like I said, I'm not an artist so any mild shadowing occurring does not bother me. I'm much more excited about having just one book in front of me (and I use my computer for research and dictionary look-ups). This Journaling Bible works for me -- I even take it to church with me instead of switching back and forth to a "church Bible" like I used to. I do plan on buying more of these when I find them on sale since I want to use them as "yearly" Bibles.
mom2 Stars Out Of 5not the oneDecember 27, 2016momQuality: 2Value: 3Meets Expectations: 1I wanted this bible to be my go-to bible that I could write all my notes in and one day pass onto my daughter. It is pretty and I think it will be durable but the pages are too thin. I expected a jounaling bible to have better quality pages. These are so thin that you can see the text from the next page through them. I dont mean you can see the text from the back of the page, I mean the next page. I'll continue using my other non-journaling ESV study bible.
seekerGender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent larger print journaling BibleJuly 30, 2016seekerGender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This journaling Bible is everything I was expecting it to be. The 9 pt. font is larger than that in most journaling Bibles and is clear and easy to read. It's large, not giant, print. The text is line-matched which reduces ghosting. The paper seems thicker than many Bible papers and is a cream color. The wide margins are lined, excellent for taking notes but could also be used for illustrations if desired. Unlike some journaling Bibles, there are no pre-printed illustrations in the margins. I wanted a journaling Bible for taking notes and underlining (as I can't bring myself to mark in my other Bibles), and this one is well suited for that. There are no cross references but there are some text footnotes. It is in single column format with a good line length for readability. There is a table of contents and preface about the ESV translation, a table of weights, measures, and money and a year's reading plan, but no maps or concordance. The words of Christ are printed in black. The binding is sewn and there is one ribbon marker. It comes in a nice slipcase. The Bible measures about 9-1/2" x 7" x 2" thick, and it's not too heavy for its size. I like the Summer Garden pattern on the hard cover. Overall, this edition does an excellent job of balancing print size, paper quality, overall size and weight, and layout for note-taking in the wide margins.
I'm using a blue Pigma Micron 005 marker and Accu Gel Bible Hi-glider highlighters, and there is very little ghosting and no bleed-through. My black Pigma Micron 01 also works well but with slightly more ghosting but still no bleed-through. Colored pencils and crayons should also work well. An XF or XXF regular pen might work, but I've only written with the Pigma Micron pens so far.
As for the ESV translation, it is a mainstream, literal translation in modern but not colloquial English; accurate, with beautiful language and easy to read and understand.
This is a great edition for note-takers and journalers who need larger print. For those with very good eyesight, similar editions are available in a smaller overall size with 7.5 pt. type.
