The ESV Single Column Journaling Bible is a complete redesign of the original Journaling Bible. The Bible text is laid out in an easy-to-follow, single-column format. Ruled lines in the extra-wide margins enable users to more easily align their notes with specific verses. With high-quality Bible paper and cover materials, the Single Column Journaling Bible is a durable edition for anyone who wants to capture notes, prayers, or personal reflections in their Bible.
Jail Chaplain, M.Div.5 Stars Out Of 5We write so that our joy be complete.August 10, 2016Jail Chaplain, M.Div.Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Had the NIV double-columned version for awhile, but when I saw this Crossways item I never looked back, except for transferring all my notes to my ESV single-column. I prefer the ESV translation anyway, plus it's hard to pencil in notes in double columns; you can reach one column or the other, but not both.
I like that the ESV journaling bible has light underlining along the ends of the lines, otherwise my handwriting slopes down.
The book itself is very stiff and sturdy, to easily hold in my lap while writing. I'm with those who prefer to write their own annotations. It's a great idea and this one is well-executed.
mistydawn9295 Stars Out Of 5ESV Single Column Journaling bibleJanuary 18, 2016mistydawn929Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I ordered this bible around Christmas at an amazing price!! when it came i was a little surprised how small it is, even though i could clearly see the deminsions on the website. the font was pretty small too but still readable. i love everything about it now that ive started joirnaling.
TLee2 Stars Out Of 5Wish I had checked it out in the stores before purchasingDecember 19, 2014TLeeQuality: 3Value: 4Meets Expectations: 2This Bible will work okay for it's intended purpose - a place to doodle and journal during my daily quiet time - but I really wish I had held it in hand before purchasing one. I think I would skip it and just stick with my regular Bible instead, which already has fairly wide margins.
The exterior size is nice and the Bible is lightweight; I like the shape and the feel of it in my hand. The elastic cord is very convenient!
But the interior... ugh. I really wanted to enjoy journaling in this Bible, but I detest the color of the interior pages. The paper is a very, very creamy yellow and does affect the color of any media I use on it. The paper is also very thin, and some types of pens feather on it. I was expecting a bit better paper in a "journaling" Bible.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the font is extremely small and appears a bit fuzzy on the yellow paper. Of course, this could be my 44 year old eyes.
Also, this Bible does not lay flat when opened, which makes it a bit difficult when trying to journal in it. I can work around the curvature of the spine and the page edges (which tend to curl up), but still it is a bit of a hassle.
Again, this Bible will work OKAY. However, I was hoping for more of a keepsake. I would be willing to pay a bit more for a better product. Since Bible journaling is becoming more popular, maybe someone (hello, publishers!) will put together a better quality journaling Bible. Until then, this will suffice.
PatriciaLouisianaAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Love Love Love this Bible!July 9, 2014PatriciaLouisianaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5There are a few things about this Bible that I am enjoying (1) the ESV version is very easy to understand and my favorite (2) the font size could have been larger but is a comfortable size for me (3) the color of the paper makes the print easy to read and the quality of the paper is similar to notebook paper. I also had my name imprinted, something I was quite nervous about, but I never should have stressed because it looked great. Thank you so much for a quality bible that will be used for many years to come. :)
Randy A BrownTNAge: 35-44Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5I love this layoutNovember 27, 2012Randy A BrownTNAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Crossway's nice ESV Journaling Bible is now available in single column format. All the basics are here: sewn binding, paragraph format, single column, ruled lines for notes, cream paper, and a bold font.
Cover and Binding
It seems to be durable; this Bible is meant to be used. It has an elastic strap to keep the Bible closed.
The binding is sewn, allowing it to stay open and lay flat when opened to any page. You won't have to hold the Bible open to write in Genesis or Revelation. This is essential for journaling.
The font is small, but it's still very easy to read because it's sharp and bold. I've seen reports of around 7.5 but that could be the leading. I usually want a larger print font, but I haven't had any trouble reading this text (except for after a long day of looking at a computer screen). If I could make one change it might be to increase the font size, but this small text will not keep me from using it.
The verse numbers and headings in the text are even bolder. I like that a lot. Bold verse numbers greatly help when looking for specific verses. The bold headings stand out and help break up the page, giving it a better designed look.
The text is in single column, paragraph format. Poetry is set in verse. Verses that are Old Testament quotes are centered, making them stand out from the rest of the passage. This layout is beautiful. It makes the text much more readable because it feels natural.
The outside margins are lined for writing. They are 2 inches wide and have a line for every line of text. The ruled lines are narrow ruled, so you'll have to write small.
The paper is thick and opaque, and has a deep cream tint. At first I thought it was too dark, but after using it for a few days it has become my favorite paper in any Bible. Some ghosting does show through, but I believe that's due to the boldness of the text.
There are footnotes at the bottom of the page that are keyed to the text with numbers. The footnotes go throughout the whole Bible, but the references are only in the New Testament. Footnotes include alternate translations, Hebrew and Greek explanations, explanatory notes, and technical notes.
There are two types of cross-references. There are references for parallel passages in the Gospels, and there are references for Old Testament quotes in the New Testament. References are keyed with letters.
Footnote and reference keys are not in bold, so they blend with the text. This helps keep the text readable.
It doesn't have very much in the way of extras, but it's fine for the purpose of a journaling Bible. This way there are not a lot of distractions. ââ¬Ë
There is a table of weights and measures. It also includes monetary units. It show Biblical units, American and metric equivalents, and Biblical equivalents.
There is a daily reading plan that gives you a passage from the OT, Psalms, and the NT. You can keep up with where you are by the date that's printed in the reading plan.
There is one ribbon. It would almost be nice to have three ribbons - one for each portion of Scripture in the reading plan, but since the reading plan has the date it's not that necessary. The ribbon is long enough to be useful.
I find that this is the Bible I pick up to read more than any Bible I own. I love the layout, the paper, and the print. This is now the standard that I compare all Bibles to. It feels durable and looks great. I would like to see a version of this Bible in every translation. It's an amazing Bible at any price. It's even a great Bible for taking notes and just using like you would a regular wide-margin Bible. I highly recommend this Bible for journaling, note-taking, and general reading.
Crossway provided this Bible free for review. I was not required to give a positive review- only an honest review. My opinion is my own.
