The ESV Reader’s Gospels invites you to approach each Gospel—Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John—as its own unified, cohesive story. The text is presented in a beautifully designed single-column format and is printed on cream, opaque book paper. All verse numbers, chapter numbers, footnotes, and cross-references have been removed, resulting in a text that reads more like a novel.
Occasional section headers alert you to thematic shifts in the narrative, and these headers are also located at the top of the page to assist in navigation.
The Reader's Gospels allows you to immerse yourself in God’s Word and see afresh the beauty and glory of Jesus Christ and the power of the gospel.

Snyder's SoapboxFruitland, IdahoAge: 35-44Gender: Male5 Stars Out Of 5Review of the ESV Reader's Gospels in black top grain leather over board.February 14, 2017Snyder's SoapboxFruitland, IdahoAge: 35-44Gender: MaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Alright folks, with the recent release of the ESV 6 volume Readers set, I thought you might like to read a review about this Readers edition of the Gospels. It would be a less expensive way for you to see if you want to shell out the bucks for the entire 6 volume set. Maybe you dont want the entire set, just the gospels? Whatever the case may be, I offer this review up for your information and pleasure.
The Readers edition is an interesting concept. There are no chapter or verse numbers. There are no cross references or footnotes. The paragraph format is done according to where new paragraphs would start in English. The books are typically arranged other than that. The only way to tell where you are in a book, is by using the index in the back in conjunction with the page numbers. All of this is to accomplish the mission of a readers edition, to remove obstacles or impediments for the reader.
I find that as I read, I lose track of my progress. I tend to read more in this volume. Some of it is due to the lack of chapter and verse numbers, as well as the lack of cross references and footnotes. While some of the other design and layout features contribute to it as well. For instance, Crossway utilized a high quality, cream colored, uncoated, heavyweight paper more commonly seen in hardback novels. It is 80 g.s.m. and you can hardly see through it at all. The font is 12 pt. in size. It is sharp and clear. It is laid out in a single column. This edition is truly meant to be read through like a book. There is nothing in between you and the text. I could go on and list all of the cool features of this edition, and I will, but I want to make sure you understand what the point is. Reading and experiencing the gospels in a more fluid and retainable way was the goal, and Crossway achieved it. Bonus is that there is no eyestrain, or headache after a long reading session.
This volume comes in a nice heavy slipcase. It is intended to be kept, and used for storing this volume in when not being used.
Once it is out of the box, the first thing youll notice is how soft the topgrain leather is. If you dont like leather over board, or if you want a Readers edition with a smaller price tag while retaining the same text block, you could get it with cloth over board.
Legatoria Editoriale Giovanni Olivotto or L.E.G.O. for short did a wonderful job printing and binding this book. They are gaining some serious notoriety amongst quality book and Bible collectors here in the states. Jongbloed in the Netherlands might have some competition in text block production if they dont watch out ??
Youll notice the page edges are not gilt. There are decorative head and tail bands in gold and black. The spine has, The Gospels at the head, the ESV logo below that, English Standard Version after that, and the Crossway logo at the foot in gold. There are also four ornamental spine hubs. The book names, headings, and drop caps are printed in an appealing red text. Id never heard of Munken Premium Cream woodfree paper before, but after seeing it Im sold. There is a crimson ribbon marker. Of course, like youd expect on a high quality book, the spine is sewn. This ensures a durable, and useable binding.
After reading from this edition, I am eager to purchase the 6 volume set. I will probably get the cloth over board due to the price. I am looking at getting the new Schuyler Personal NASB Quentel when it comes out this year, so I have to save my money ?? That way I can get both. I would highly recommend getting this for anyone wanting to try a readers edition out. It is one thing to know the concept, but another to live with it for a while.
Jail Chaplain, M.Div.5 Stars Out Of 5take up and readOctober 17, 2016Jail Chaplain, M.Div.Quality: 5Value: 0Meets Expectations: 5I'm giving the Reader's Gospels as a gift to all the members of my colleague group.
Yes yes yes, I know, we all have got the four Gospels already, within our bibles, but . . . because this book is set up like an ordinary hardbacked book, no verse numbers, no teesy cross references, no notes, even-- unlike our usual bibles that are set up almost like reference books--you will find yourself:
1. reading on and on and on,
2. picking up smoother connections you hadn't noticed before,
3. getting more deeply immersed in the story,
without every paragraph having its own superscripted announcement of WHAT you will find in the chapter. (But if you find you miss the chapter headings, they run more discreetly across the top of the pages.)
I would not mind having the purely translation notes at the page bottom, but of course that would upend the whole idea, and we have those in other bibles.
It comes in a great sturdy slipcase, very handsome, and it allows you to stand the book easily alone on your table or on a shelf. The volume is in quite a plain cover. The pages are not only page-matched but on thicker paper, again it makes it easier to turn pages--and carefree; no careful separating of pages as with onion skin and gilding and the usual Bible paper.
Crossways with the English Standard Version has been hitting the mark in recent years with by far the most thoughtful (and really, least expensive) new designs, and new takes on traditional ones. Single-paragraph versions, reader's versions, journaling versions, from paperback through tru-tone and on into goatskin bound. Remember to thank our generous God that we in this country are blessed to see so many beautifully produced, carefully translated bibles, and remember those in places that have yet to see even their first.
seekerGender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5I just keep reading and reading...May 24, 2016seekerGender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I can't say enough good things about the ESV Readers Gospels! Yes, we have the same four Gospels in our full Bibles, but this format makes reading them almost effortless. When I've started reading for a few minutes, I'm always surprised how much I've read before stopping. The text just flows so smoothly you just want to keep going.
This is a hand size book, with a very nice cloth over board hard cover. The paper is not thin Bible paper; it is thick opaque book paper. The line-matched printing is done in large 12 point type with ample space between the lines. The printing was done in Italy and the binding is sewn. The format is just like a well bound regular book. The title page of each book, the section headings, and the first large drop-cap letter of the section are done in deep red, adding just the right accent. There is one brown satin ribbon. The dark brown cloth covered spine has ridges and is stamped in gold. The slipcase is sturdy and good for storing vertically on the book shelf if desired. Very nice quality throughout and at a very reasonable price here.
For those who are familiar with the single-volume ESV Readers Bible, the Readers Gospels have larger print and much thicker paper, making an even better reading experience.
There are no chapter and verse numbers within the text, but there is a list of each book's chapters and their page numbers in the back, making it easy to find a particular book and chapter if needed. There are no references or footnotes. This simple format, along with the wonderful paper and printing, are what make this volume so very inviting and easy to read. (Chapter and verse numbers were later additions to the old manuscripts, so this is not "changing" the Bible.) It's just another way to experience and comprehend the Gospels in the ESV translation.
I had heard so many good things about this Readers edition that I wanted to try it, but in the back of my mind I was thinking "not needed." I was wrong. This is just a delightful product for the mature Christian and also for those who perhaps won't read in their full Bible. I highly recommend the Readers Gospels, and I'm ordering another for gifting. A more expensive leather bound edition is also available.
Apparently Crossway also has a similarly formatted multi-volume readers edition of the entire Bible coming out later this year.
allentr905 Stars Out Of 5Yes!! This is perfect!!!!!!!!!October 1, 2015allentr90Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is what I've been looking for... scripture that reads like a novel. It's printed on thick paper with a perfect size font, exactly as you would see in a novel. Everything about it is perfect... except for the fact that the rest of the bible needs to be released in this format!
Crossway, will you please please release all of scripture in this format?? :)
Trisha5 Stars Out Of 5Absolutely Stunning!!!!!!!!October 1, 2015TrishaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book is the 4 Gospels- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John printed on thick opaque paper and without any cross references, verse/chapter numbers or section headings. It reads like a NOVEL. I find myself getting lost in the storyline of the gospels and reading for large periods of time. The type size is large but not too large, maybe 10 point I would guess. This is similar to the ESV Reader's Bible but of course, it is only the gospels AND it's printed on thicker, opaque paper which makes a HUGE difference. There is absolutely no ghosting and it's easy on my eyes to read for large periods of time. This is how the bible was meant to be read!
In the back there is a listing of each page and what chapter it is... for example page 261 is John chapter 7. So if you wanted to know what chapter you were reading you could easily do that by looking in the back.
This is absolutely beautiful and my new favorite (partial) bible! I am going to write to Crossway, the publisher, and ask if they will release the whole bible in this stunning format- The Gospels, The Epistles, The Prophets, Covenant History, and Poetry in 5 separate volumes. It would be a huge hit!!!!!
