JDS4 Stars Out Of 5Very Nice Reading ExperienceJanuary 30, 2018JDSQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4It does what it's supposed too. If you have 15 minutes or more to relax and let yourself get lost in the Word; this chapter-free, verse-free edition helps a lot accomplish that goal. Reading copious amounts of the Bible in one sitting helps make a birds-eye view of connections in the Word that segmented Bible study (or reading) ever can. For over 20 years now I have been in the habit of reading the entire book of Ecclesiastes on Thanksgiving Day, and the entire book of Job on Christmas. I have done it the last two you years with this Readers Edition, and it is defiantly a more enjoyable experience.
My normal go-to translation is NASB because I love how technically stringent it holds to the Greek. But for ease a reading, the ESV has been a new and enjoyable translation experience for me. I dont like how the 150 chapters of Psalms are not labeled though. I think this should have been the one exception to the Readers Edition format. People have come to know certain Psalms by their chapter titles (23rd Psalm, 91st Psalm...etc.), and it is frustrating to be looking at a bunch of 1 page or 2 page passages without either a chapter reference or Psalm title to give you an idea if you want to read that Psalm or pass on to something that feels more relevant at the moment. When you read the next Psalm, it all ends up feeling like a jumbled cluster of unassociated thoughts and topics that hinder the goal to get caught up in the reading experience. Without chapters in the Psalms, I simply dont know where Im at or where Im going when reading it. I suppose the structure of the book of Psalms doesnt lend itself to the Readers Edition format very well.
This is not a replacement for what most would consider their regular Bible. It is a special tool for the person who wishes to carve out more time in their life to simply absorb large amounts of Gods Word into their heart without distractions.
JoeDial4 Stars Out Of 5Love ItJanuary 22, 2018JoeDialQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Since becoming a Christian, I have struggled with reading the Bible. I understand its significance to all Christians, but found it hard to read. I tried multiple translations and formats, including Study Bibles, Chronological Bibles, all without much success. I really began to question why I was having so much trouble. This all changed when I got the softcover ESV Reader's Bible. I am a reader, always have been, and as soon as I saw the Bible in the "familiar" format (like a book, printed on real paper) I began to devour it. As other posters have said, I have sat down to sit on the word for a bit (not surprisingly, this brings me great comfort) and look up to find hours have passed and I have covered many pages. I am not put off by the lack of chapter and verse cues for two reasons. One, as mentioned, there is an index in each book (I find it very handy when wanting to discuss with others), and two, I have several other Bibles the have those markings. I have promised myself the gift of the hardbacked set once I finish reading (and re-reading, it seems) the softcovers.
I completely recommend this set to everyone, it really offers a different perspective on the Word.

Greg3 Stars Out Of 5Not as practical as I thought for what I was intending to use it for.November 20, 2017GregQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3I was given the hardcover cloth edition as a gift (it was on my wish list.) My intended purpose was to simply read w/o making notes or highlighting in order to come away with an idea of what was where in the Bible. Without chapter and verse headings, this won't do that. I knew they weren't there, but didn't realize how much that would impact my intended purpose until I started reading it. However, I also didn't want the strict verse format of the KJV, and I also didn't want someone else's study notes cluttering it up. Frankly, I don't read the Bible for entertainment. I use it to get me through hour-by-hour, day-by-day, week-by-week, and so on.
With that said, this is a handsome set. It already has an unexpected benefit in that my non-believing spouse was curious about the books that were labeled "Poetry". She was amazed that there was poetry in the Bible.
Adam5 Stars Out Of 5ESV Reader's Bible, Six-Volume Set (Cloth over Board)November 9, 2017AdamQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The box and books are excellent. They have made Bible reading easier and since I got these volumes it has been much easier for me to make a daily habit of Bible reading. Hopefully a set like this will do the same for others.
It is worth noting the product description lists the ink color as black, but there are occasional red-ink section headings. Also, the product description lists the text size as 10-point, but it is clearly 12-point both by appearance and according to the pamphlet that comes with the Bible set.
The paper, print, font, binding and size are all good. The cloth covers and paper are pleasant to touch, the size and weight of the volumes are convenient for holding the books and reading them. It is a good Bible for people who like books.
Without the chapter and verse indicators, it is not so easy to look up a particular passage in this set. There are also virtually no cross-references, notes on textual variances, or anything like that. The set is optimized for ease of reading and not for research. I have not found this to be a problem, as I have other Bibles that do have chapter and verse indicators to look things up in, and I suspect most people who would buy a product like this will also have other Bibles. If you come across something in these that you want to find the exact chapter and verse for that is quite easy since the ESV is a popular translation. All you have to do is enter part of the verse into Google and it pops right up.
All in all, very good. Hopefully someone will do something similar soon in the King James Version, as that would also be fantastic!
