J. Barrett5 Stars Out Of 5BeautifulNovember 10, 2016J. BarrettQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Crossway has produced a beautiful "reader's Bible" in six volumes. It's important to have fair expectations: this is not an ideal Bible for study, nor is it presented "as the Bible was supposed to be." Many Bibles exist to suit the needs and desires of its readers such as journaling, one-column, two-column, cross-reference, study Bibles, etc. But this, here, is a "reader's Bible" where the verses and chapters have been removed and the appearance of the text has been redesigned. A small handful of section titles remain, but these do not distract from the reading experience.
Each volume is incredible from the standpoint of the paper, printed text, binding, and overall design. Every aspect of these volumes is clearly aimed at enhancing the reading experience and Crossway has succeeded in this regard. As someone who has studied the Bible for many years, it is refreshing to encounter Scripture without the added chapters and verses. The quality of these volumes adds to this experience, making it not only distraction-free (in terms of what is on the page), but also a visually satisfying experience.
Crossway has thankfully provided an "index of chapters" in the back of each volume. So, say you want to look up Genesis 15 and don't want to flip through page after page, looking for where the chapter may begin. Go to the index, find Genesis 15, and it will give you the correct page.
Personally, I find the design on the inside of the covers and on the outside of the box to be well done. The box may be cardboard (you can spend a lot more money for the leather bound volumes and walnut box), but it still looks classy, is sturdy, and functions as needed.
I also find the ESV translation to be preferable to the revised ASV found in the Bibliotheca project by Adam Greene. Crossway has provided not only an alternative, but an alternative that at minimum matches the quality and attention to detail of the Bibliotheca volumes, but also one that surprasses it with a much better translation.
seekerGender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5A treasure for extended Bible readingOctober 28, 2016seekerGender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is a Bible for reading and comprehending God's word without the distractions of added material or choppy text. The set is a unique and excellent multi-volume edition of the Bible that encourages you to read and just keep on reading. These volumes are formatted like nice regular hardback books, and the thick paper, 12-pt. printing, and generous spacing make a wonderful, easy reading experience. By omitting the chapter and verse breaks, and most section headings, the text flows easily and understandably. (The chapter and verse divisions were not added to the Scriptures until around the 1,200's, so omitting those numbers isn't "changing" the Bible.) There is a short index in each volume that gives the page number that each chapter begins on should you need to locate a certain chapter quickly. The name of the book and section is shown in a header at the top of each page, with the page number at the bottom. These are beautiful hardback books with a quality construction that could easily become a family heirloom and are a joy to use.
This set gets excellent reviews by many Bible reviewers such as Mark Bertrand on bibledesignblog dot com, and others. Mark's six-part reviews of these sets give lots of detailed info and beautiful photos. I'm amazed at the difference this format makes in reading longer passages at a sitting.
The ESV Readers "The Gospels" is very similarly formatted and gives a very similar reading experience (at less than $14 here currently) for those who want to try this format before buying the set. (The single-volume Readers Bible has much thinner paper and more lines on each page, and isn't really comparable to the books in this set.) A leather-covered set with a walnut case is also available online elsewhere, more expensive of course. Crossway (a non-profit ministry) went all out with both these sets, and they are a blessing for Bible readers. Those with less than perfect eyesight will be especially pleased.
