ipso facto5 Stars Out Of 5Good quality, nice layout, clear fonts, great translation and great notes.June 13, 2018ipso factoQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This review is for the ESV MacArthur Study Bible Large Print version. I knew I would be happy with MacArthur's notes and other material since I have read and listened to his teachings for several years. The ESV translation was actually my second choice, after the NASB. Unfortunately after buying the NASB version I found it to have serious quality problems that made it nearly impossible to read, so I had to return it. You can see my review on that item's web page if you want to know the details.
The NASB was published by Thomas Nelson in 2010 and the ESV was published by Crossway in 2017, and the preview shows that the ESV page layout is very different than the NASB, so I decided to try it. I am glad I did; this one is a keeper! And I do generally prefer reading the ESV translation because its overall flow is smoother than the NASB, which is a more accurate word-for-word translation but more difficult to read.
The page layout is very good, with double-column text, footnotes under the bible text area, and cross-references under the footnotes. I prefer this to a center-column reference because the actual text columns are wider, so your eyes don't need to move back-and-forth as much. The margins are narrow and there is very little room for making notes. However, the narrow margins do not cause any problems reading the text on the inner margins, where the pages are bound. I have found that problem in several bibles and reference books from other publishers.
The typeface is clean and modern, and the print is dark and clear. I have read conflicting information about the font sizes used in this bible but I would say that the bible text is 11 point and the study notes either 8.5 or 9 point. The publisher's website says they are 9pt, so they might just look smaller than that because of the large font used for the bible text.
The paper is thin but good quality; it does not have the cheap feel that some thin paper has. There is some ghosting (print showing through from other side of page, which happens on any bible that uses thin paper) but it is not terrible and is most noticable in the poetic scriptures.
The dimensions of the hardcover version are 9.5 x 6.75 x 2.25 inches, and it weighs just under 4 pounds. The overall quality of the book is excellent and the Smyth-sewn binding should last a lifetime.
Rick5 Stars Out Of 5Aims to pleaseApril 9, 2018RickQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5And it does. It is everything I thought it would be and more. I highly recommend it for average layman. If anything more is needed, I recommend the netbible used by most of the tranlaters.
Roger3 Stars Out Of 5ESV Macarthur Study BibleJanuary 26, 2018RogerQuality: 4Value: 3Meets Expectations: 1The Bible is way too heavy and bulky for multi-purpose use (study plus carry to church or visitation, etc). Returned. Probably would have been great for study Bible and the large print was great (although did not get to use since it was returned). Very difficult to buy quality Bibles online since need to see and feel.

Rick2 Stars Out Of 5ESV MacArthur Study Bible, Large PrintJanuary 10, 2018RickQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 2Excellent Bible with study notes. I found the bleed through from the back of each page very distracting and made it difficult to read. This is not a Bible that you would take to church on Sunday, it is way to heavy. Good for home study.
