I know this may not seem a typical beginning to a review, especially regarding that of a book! (smile out loud) I took months to research and look into the Bible that had what I was needing from page to page, the additional insights provided that were not over done, additional items such as maps, references, etc. Recently I lost everything dear to me in a sevre accident in a snow storm moving from Colorado to Arizona. Beginning again is a gift and one that I thank the Father for, ALWAYS. Yet, as a 45 yar old woman now starting over with nothing was heartbreaking. I decided that finding a new bible was what would be the start of hope again. I researched a long time and I am simply amazed that my bible feels as if it has been under my arm, chin, head, and so on forever! The beautiful leather is so soft and pliable, it is truly a beautiful bible but more than that, it is my most comfortable companion! AND NOW, MY FIRST FAMILY HEIRLOOM!
I am a seminary student and have come to appreciate academic level resources. When I came to school, I purchased another study bible and am not happy. After a time in school, have come to recognize good accessible go-to resources and this bible is an excellent one looking at scripture from a systematic level drawing on multiple viewpoints for the readers to understand and lean on for perspective. My wife had another study bible that was general and not helpful for gaining deeper understanding. This bible adds depth to her level of understanding in text, history, interpretation and visually with maps and timelines. I'm envious, but should not be as I have access to many commentaries in my current profession as a student. It is a tremendous resource and am happy I purchased for my wife. Oh, and the purple iris design will ensure that I don't "borrow" her bible for my own use. "Honey, I bought you this .357 magnum because I thought you'd like it..."
On my first day of reading my ESV Study Bible, in one year, it is both enlightening and burdensome. I like the notes that explain the different theories of how the original text was written, the word meanings, and the description of pagan culture in comparison with biblical directives. However, the notes are not written as easy to read as the bible text. There are so many notes in Genisis 1-3. Plus, the 8 point type of the notes is unreadable without magnification, even under extra illumination. Since the majority of the study bible consists of the notes, most of the time I am using the magnifier. I should have bought an eBible, where I could just expand the note text with my fingers. That would work better for me.
I needed a new study bible and my favorite color is purple, but it was hard for me to find a purple study bible. There were plenty of purple pocket bibles or new testaments but I was SO excited when I found the ESV study bible. Thank you! I am more than thrilled with doing business with Christianbook.com. You are the best! Merry Christmas!
