BlastusChicago, ILAge: 18-24Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5That Heirloom Tho!April 28, 2015BlastusChicago, ILAge: 18-24Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4The Heirloom Thinline in black calfskin is definitely better than the Tru-Tone (imitation leather) versions. The Heirloom is also very slightly bigger that the Tru-Tone Thinlines; about a 1/2 inch on the sides. The pages are NOT bigger and neither is the font. What makes the Heirloom slightly bigger is the yap (the cover's overhang). Also the Heirloom is slightly thinner than the Tru-Tone Thinlines due to thinner more luxurious paper pages. This Bible is so nice to handle, physically, in my hands that I find myself wanting to pick it up and read it more... -_-
The quality is excellent, from the thick yet smooth and pliable calfskin cover to the buttery soft pages. The leather lining on the inside of the cover is outstanding. This calfskin is definitely different (in a good way) than most calfskin bibles I have encountered, even from Crossway. The grain is beautiful and it fells super sturdy, and it smells nice.
The only issue, as with most people, is that the book does not lay open completely flat. Allow me to explain; so the leather cover will open flat with both front and back covers against the surface it rests on, but the text block (the actual pages) does not completely rest against the covers, due to the reinforced hinges on the inside of the cover. I suppose that over time the hinges will relax a bit as the Bible "breaks in," allowing it to open more flat. We will have to see.
So if you're in the market for a new Bible and are tired of them always breaking down on you as I was. Or if you are a fan of ESV's Thinline Bibles and want a high end, high quality version that will last you til the rapture; buy this one! You will not regret spending the extra dough.

It will never open flat because of hard "hinges" in both covers.
Pastor AndyAge: 35-44Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Best Bible by farJune 25, 2014Pastor AndyAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This has been the best quality Bible I have had the privilege of owning. A distant second would be Thomas Nelson Signature series. Third would be Pitt Minion Goatskin
SergPace, FLAge: 25-34Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Quality worthy of the world's greatest BookJune 24, 2014SergPace, FLAge: 25-34Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5I have a big ol' Study Bible that I received as a wedding gift from my wife. While I like having it to reference the notes and passage elaborations, it is a bit bulky to take with me outside the home. I downloaded a Bible app on my iPad, but I find the tablet platform distracting when I am trying to spend serious time in The Word. I was looking for something compact, durable and of good quality. I began looking at genuine leather Bibles vice DuoTone or bonded leather Bibles. As superficial as it may seem, I think I would be more likely to pick up the Bible, carry it and read it regularly with the sensory experience of holding a good looking book without concern about delicate handling.
What I like about this Bible is the no-nonsense print, no distracting notes in the margins or dizzyingly small font that is found in other compact Bibles. I can just read the text without the commentary. The fit and finish is top-notch, far and away the best quality I have ever owned. The leather is soft and supple, but thick enough to provide decent protection against everyday life. The sewn vice glued binding is another plus for those that appreciate the details.
I tend to like the more natural look of brown leather, which I ordered, but the store accidentally sent me the black version. I was about to rewrap it to exchange but then I started to examine it and decided I liked the more formal appearance of black over a more casual brown leather. It is the Bible after all! Plus the contrast of the black leather with gold gilding on the paper is very impressive. I don't think it would have the same impact with the brown leather. Personal preference, of course.
If a want a Bible good looking enough for a President to take his oath of office on, yet durable enough to throw in your book bag everyday, don't be afraid to spend a little extra on the greatest Book you will ever own. This is my new everyday Bible that goes wherever I go, and I am confident that it will last a lifetime or longer.
ReillyBC, CanadaAge: Under 18Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Best of the best.March 3, 2014ReillyBC, CanadaAge: Under 18Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5It is so hard to believe I went for the cheaper option... I can't possibly imagine the goatskin could be nicer than this. Even if the goatskin on my Pitt Minion was leather lined, it would not be this nice. This is not the same calfskin seen on the Clarion; this is nicer. It is also far nicer than the black calfskin seen on Abba bibles. My advice? Don't think of the calfskin option as inferior. If you love calfskin, try the black or brown calf. This is the nicest calfskin there is.
The fit and finish is flawless. The black leather liner is unlike any liner I have seen; it deserves just as much attention as the cover itself. The guilt line on my copy is free of imperfection - not something you can guarantee on every copy, but still.
The paper is, well, Jongbloed. Either you hate not being able to flip somewhere fast, or love it for all its silky awesomeness. I find myself in the latter camp. The paper is definitely thicker than the Pitt Minion.
I was a little hesitant about the hinges in the bible that keep it from opening totally flat. After some playing around, I totally understand why Crossway would do this and risk upsetting some people. These hinges all but completely protect the sewing. Even it yoga positions, the sewing isn't even close to being stressed by tension. You'd have to see it to understand. So the bible doesn't lay totally flat, but the binding will last much longer because of this.
I always loved the ESV thinline for being portable while giving me a large page size. If you want a personal bible to last you for years rather than sit on your shelf with thirty others, I strongly recommend you try this bible. Crossway knows what's up in the binding world.
