Steve V4 Stars Out Of 5Superb Setting for the ESV Reader's Gospel of JohnMarch 9, 2018Steve VQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5At long last, we have an edition of John's Gospel which shows by its body a full measure of respect for the reader and the message.
It is intended mainly for readers who have not not yet placed their faith in Christ, but seasoned saints will also appreciate it for extended reading and meditation.
Good paper, 12-point type, an uncrowded page, and a simple, clear design speak together in harmony to say "We care about the message, and we care about you the reader." The size is 6 inches by 4.25 inches, somewhat over 100 pages.
The Introduction to the Gospel is a model of clear, winsome writing. It takes up only a page and a half. Next comes a two page Preface, which is mostly about the ESV translation.
The text of the Gospel is divided into five unequal sections, each with its heading. The only smaller divisions are by paragraph breaks without any extra spaces or symbols. There are no chapter or verse numbers in the text, though you can locate chapters by page numbers using an index at the back.
After the text of the Gospel comes a page headed "What Now?" in which readers are invited to entrust themselves to Christ. After this comes the Index of Chapters, then plans for reading the Gospel in 3, 7, or 21 days.
There is a certain conflict between the evangelistic intent of this beautiful little volume, and the difficulties new readers will encounter in a relatively literal translation such as the ESV. Many of them will need an extra measure of support.
But this little edition is a marvelous resource for which we owe thanks to God. May it find a wide and effective ministry!
