I was given this bible several years ago. I found this ESV Study Bible to be very helpful. The notes help explain some of those verses that sometimes I just don't seem to understand. It also gives great background information and insight to explain that time period. I recently bought two of these ESV Study Bibles for my daughters. Now that they are older and studying Gods word I wanted them to have their own. I will recommend it to everyone. :)
As a seminary student, I have been pressed into biblical learning from many facets. This bible is sound in delivering more than basic information about scripture. The bible book backgrounds are up to date and descriptions summarize what I've read in many commentaries. The study notes offer valuable insight quickly reading the bible text. I have used this book to get a good summary of the book, passage and text that I am studying before digging deeper for research purposes. I enjoy the theological end matter, as it once again gives a good brief overview of systematic theology. Material in this book tends toward the reformed perspective, which if you are not in agreement, you can take it with a grain of salt and move forward with the truth of interpretation that is with it. It is a thick book and I appreciate the way it lays open and is easy to read. The binding seems durable yet flexible. I've owned and read multiple study bibles and this is the best one by far for general (least biased toward a theological perspective) systematic study of scripture.
I recently purchased the ESV Stuby Bible by various recommendations for one and I already owned a simple reference ESV for church. I began a read the bible in one year through a gentleman on my Twitter account and he made plenty of references to his study bible. I asked him what bible he recommends and he referred to the one he owns being the ESV Study Bible. I purchased it through Christian.com after searching various brick and mortar stores and other online stores. Christian.com had the best price for me. I really enjoy the detail references, maps and side note information contain in this bible. I will definitely have this bible for a very long time or until our Lord tarys!!
The content of the ESV study Bible is still without equal. The new Zondervan NIV study Bible(D.A. Carson) comes close but falls short. The study notes, chapter introduction, maps and charts are fantastic. Wayne Grudem has wrote many articles located in the back on numerous topics that christians will find helpful. Christain ethics, cults, religions, interpreting the Bible and Biblical doctrine are just a few of the articles.
In regards to the Calfskin Study Bible, I was a little disappointed. I have a genuine leather ESV study Bible that I would give 5 stars. The calfskin came with some issues with the print. It is hard to go 10 pages without finding atleast one letter that is smudged on the page. This is disappointing considering this is a premium binding. However my cheaper ESV (genuine leather) lacks the print issue. My Calfskin issue is likley isolated, but disappointing consider the Bible is well over $100.
