The NIV Application Commentary Series promises to be of very great service to all who preach and teach the Word of God.
J.I. Packer
Regent College

The NIV Application Commentary Series doesn't fool around: it gets right down to business, brining this ancient and powerful word of God into the present so that it can be heard and believed with all the freshness of a new day, with all the immediacy of a friend's embrace.
Eugene Peterson,
Regent College

The NIV Application Commentary Series helps pastors and Bible teachers with one the most neglected elements in good preaching--accurate, useful application. Most commentaries tell you a few things that are helpful and much that you do not need to know. By dealing with the original meaning and contemporary significance of each passage, the NIV Application Commentary Series promises to be helpful all the way around.
James Montgomery Boice
Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, PA

This series promises to become an indispensable tool for every pastor and teacher who seeks to make the Bible's timeless message speak to this generation.
Billy Graham

Here, at last, is a commentary that makes the proper circuit from the biblical world to main street. The NIV Application Commentary is magnificent gift to the church.
Kent Hughes,
College Church, Wheaton, IL

Here at last is a commentary which is not only academically well informed but which helps the contemporary reader hear God's word and consider its implications; scholarship in the service of the church.
Arthur Rowe,
Spurgeon's College

If you want to avoid hanging applicational elephants from interpretive threads, then the NIV Application Commentary Series is for you. This series excels at both original meaning and contemporary significance. I support it one hundred percent.
Howard J. Hendricks,
Dallas Theological Seminary

This is the pulpit for the 21st Century
George K. Brushaber,
President, Bethel College & Seminary

It takes more than interpretation of God's word to change lives, it takes application. Application is the bottom line in teaching and preaching. Without it, we've missed the point of the Bible. The NIV Application Commentary is an outstanding resource for pastors and anyone else who is serious about developing "doers of the word".
Rick Warren,
Saddleback Church

The NIV Application Commentary Series shares the same goal that has been the passion of my own ministry--communicating God's word to a contemporary audience so that they feel the full impact of its message.
Bill Hybels,
Willow Creek Community Church

This series dares to go where few scholars have gone before--into the real life world of biblical application faced by pastors and teachers everyday. This is everything a good commentary series should be.
Leith Anderson
Pastor, Wooddale Church

Some commentaries build walls that isolate you back in the ancient world. The NIV Application Commentary builds bridges that make the Bible come alive with meaning for contemporary life--and the series do so concisely, clearly, and accurately. No wasted words or academic detours--just solid help and practical truth.
Warren W. Weirsbe

If you like the format of the NIV Application Commentary series you will like this commentary. Jobes' character analysis is excellent. She is fair and follows the literary clues. Her exposition is also well done. She interacts with present scholarship. Her applications are generally useful and insightful. This is a very useful commentary written from a conservative perspective. I would recommend it as one of the must have works on Esther.

The NIVAC commentary series has successfully found a niche as a resource to pick up after youve studied the major exegetical commentaries and now need to think about application and contemporary significance. This commentary on Esther by Karen Jobes fulfills the aims of the series effectively.

In the Introduction the author begins with a somewhat subversive illustration to turn our minds toward the subject of the Book of Esther, but becomes much more helpful when she discusses the Book of Esther itself. The style is more succinct, and even breezy, than in some other series, yet the main points are still well covered. The historical background, as well as authorship and date, are all well covered before the author asked the question: is Esther reliable history? I appreciated, especially after having read as many commentaries on Esther as I have, her saying that the objections raised against the historicity of Esther are not beyond explanation. She approaches genre in a section about ancient storytelling and argues that Esther has great value whether its historically accurate or not. Im a firm believer in the historicity of Esther, but love seeing her say that the relationship between biblical narrative and history consciously rests on the concept that God has in fact worked in history through events that really happened.

Her love of Esthers story becomes clear in the section on literary structure. Again, this section is not as lengthy as in some of the larger commentaries, but the bases are still well covered. The same could be said of the section on the theology of Esther. Even more in line with the design of this series is the final section on contemporary significance. You will gain some helpful insights.

After a bibliography, she jumps right into the commentary itself. As with every volume in this series, it is divided into original meaning, bridging contexts, and contemporary significance. That design cant help but have some repetition, but the author did a good job with it. I rate this volume as a success and a worthy addition to your library.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commissions 16 CFR, Part 255.

Asearch for my christian roots has taken me to a deeper look and reading of the bible. I have gotten interested in finding out more about God's people (jews)and his love for them. The Book of Esther has always facinated me. This commentary has given great insight of Esther's days and peels back layers of history. It shows how very contemporary and applicable the story of Esther is for us people call out by God.
