Part history, part guide, part resource, author Scheer condenses worship and its elements into twenty-three chapters. He divides the book into five sections: Principles; Past; Practice: Music in Worship; Practice: The Arts in Worship; and People.

He begins by defining worship and then explaining how it has been practiced through the years. His shortest section is on music in worship, a mere eight pages. The remainder of the section on Practice: Music in Worship is taken up with a general introduction to the subject and a long chapter on congregational song repertoire.

The book is colored by Scheers experience. Growing up in a Pentecostal setting, but now working in a Reformed environment, his leaning throughout the book is toward his current church situation and its practices.

The book would be invaluable to an individual heading for a position as Worship Pastor or Minister of Worship. Throughout, it provides helps to guide a person toward worship. One of the invaluable resources in each chapter is the list of additional reading that is included.

Though I cant hold a tune, I still enjoyed reading the book for a better understanding of what goes into the practice of worship on a Sunday morning.
