Espresso with Esther is an affirming reminder of God's practice of using flawed people to accomplish His purposes in every age.

I love the historical background offered and the time spent explaining where Esther "fits" into the Biblical timeline. I also appreciated that we were encouraged to dig a little deeper and ask some hard questions about the people in this book. HOWEVER, the conclusions that the author seems to have come to about those people were perplexing and somewhat difficult to accept. Upon MUCH research, I could not find a SINGLE source that agreed with her conclusions. It felt like she had made judgements about the heart attitudes of each character before even starting the book, regardless of what Bible scholars and historians had to say on the subject. I absolutely would not recommend this book.
LaChatonOntario, CAAge: 18-24Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Good, little Bible studyJune 27, 2011LaChatonOntario, CAAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 3Meets Expectations: 4Glahn has put together an interesting and thought provoking study on Esther. The daily chapters are fairly short, although there are occasional days when they are longer and take more time (but still nothing more than 30 minutes a day) so it's easy to fit into a schedule. This study includes the Scripture verses being studied directly in the book which is handy to have with you.
My only complaint about this study is that some of the questions can be difficult to answer with very little guidance if you don't understand a question or two. Nearly all of them are very straightforward but there were a couple that I found tricky.

All look forward to our weekly discussions and feel the growth from their personal involvement in the Word. Having the Bible in the study book is wonderful!
Valerie Johnson5 Stars Out Of 5September 17, 2007Valerie JohnsonA wonderfully concise yet in depth study...a true feat. Perfect for daily devotion or a weekly study with friends at a coffee shop. The college women I'm leading this for thoroughly appreciate the contextual nature of the study and the history that goes along with this amazing story of how God places people where he wants them so he can bring about the events necessary for the deliverance of a people. And S. Glahn's prose is interesting and applicable. The girls are loving this challenging and unique approach. And I appreciate the adherence and respect of Scripture.
Carmen Bucher5 Stars Out Of 5April 27, 2007Carmen BucherIn researching many studies to do with a small group this one is wonderful. As a Bible study teacher I am always seeking studies that can apply to all the ladies no matter where they are in their faith journey. Sandra Glahn has a way of making the story of Esther come alive as well as providing extensive details for a good in depth Bible study. If you are looking for a study to do on your own, this work well also. It really gets you in the habit of being in the word every day.

Tell us a little about yourself. Fifth-generation Oregonian. I believe we need to engage the five senses in our study of God's word. I'm a wife of one husband, mother of one child, and teacher of many students at Dallas Seminary (DTS).I'm working on a PhD in aesthetics (Arts and Humanities) after earning my ThM at DTS. I love Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky and Handel's Messiah.
What was your motivation behind this project? Years ago I envisioned the kind of Bible study I would like...one that allowed active study on weekdays, passive devotionals (aimed at application) on the weekends, small enough to go in a diaper bag, that included the entire Bible text I'd need so I would not have to carry a heavy Bible to the doctor's office with me to study during free minutes. One that lent itself well to both individual and group study. It needed to appeal to more than the visual-only participant. And it shouldn't be written like the writer had a perfect Christian life. It needed to have a binding I could file on my bookshelf but that had a spiral on it so I could write on it without the book flipping open. Voila! The Coffee Cup Bible Series.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? A life-changing encounter with the living God as they meet Him in His Word.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? One big influence on this book was the group at www.soulpersuit.com, who interacted with the text atistically. Some were non-artists. Yet they all found ways to give expession to their contemplations. What they created is available for viewing on the site. I love the stories of Deborah, Jael, Hulduh, Samson's mother, and Hannah, each of whom appear in the pages of this study.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: My web site at www.aspire2.com has additional info that relates to each study. For example with the Espresso with Esther study, I have links to art in which Esther is portrayed, links to novels about Esther, and commentaries. Lots of resources. There's a book excerpt from Espresso with Esther if you want to get a feel for the style.
