Dede's story comes from the heart of one who has experienced the journey of the creative, gifted child with a learning difference. Often, they are extremely gifted, but perform poorly in school, especially with reading.As teachers, parents and family members, we need to understand the strengths and weaknesses which begin in early childhood and persist through adulthood. The characteristics of dyslexia, a neurobiological disorder, are often mistaken for laziness, carelessness, or disinterest.Become an advocate for these students in classrooms, church groups, Scout troops, athletic teams, music/art departments and others. Give them an opportunity for recognition.Our students who struggle with written language need academic instruction, but they also need hope and the knowledge that you care. She is the published author of "Glimpses of God's Faithfulness" published in 2004 by Xulon Press. Currently she teaches Language Science at Woodridge Elementary and attends Mississippi College where she is pursuing a Masters degree in education with a specialization in dyslexia. She is married to Robert Toney Sr. and together they have four children and four grandchildren.
