Dr. Bob Kellemen knows that God has called all of His children to be active participants in the ministry community that He designed the church to be. Equipping of the Body of Christ for personal ministry has been Bobs lifework. This practical, step-by-step equipping manual is the mature fruit of that life-long commitment.
This is the book we needed years ago at Mars Hill Church to help us re-think our counseling ministries. By Gods grace, we ended up with something like what Dr. Kellemen envisions; but save yourself the trouble we endured and let Bobs wisdom guide you strategically through the process. In fact, join me: Ill be using this book to re-think it all over again.

Bob Kellemens Equipping Counselors for Your Church is a desperately needed gift to pastors and church leaders for helping the church to envision, enlist, equip, and empower the saints for the work of ministry. Bobs seasoned, insightful, and humble experience emerges in each chapter and is also reflected in his detailed appendices. I highly recommend this work whether you are just starting out or you have been in the trenches for years. I was personally encouraged and challenged in addition to coming away with many ideas that I will use to assess my own ministry.
Equipping Counselors for Your Church is an excellent resource for both individual leaders and also group discussion. The insight gained from years of experience by Dr. Kellemen and the twenty-four best-practice churches is evident throughout the book. This is the book for you if you want to launch a biblical counseling ministry or if you want your churchs current counseling ministry to move to a place of increased effectiveness? "Bob Kellemen knows equipping biblical counselors from A to Z. He has done a tremendous job of structuring a step-wise strategy to develop the lay counselors in your church. In his humble style, Bob has gathered the best leaders of local church counseling ministries and done the work of bench-marking for you. This is a book that you will reference often as you help the hurting, and equip the saints for the work of soul care in your church."
This is a remarkable book. Bob Kellemen has accomplished the seemingly impossible task of combining sound Christian theology, informed biblical counseling principles, and practical training procedures into a guidebook for developing a counseling ministry in the local church. While some books focus on counseling models, the structure of training programs, or on counseling techniques, Dr. Kellemen has demonstrated the importance of addressing a comprehensive biblical approach to counseling in the church. Bob gives you the information necessary to build a complete biblical counseling ministry. He walks you through each step and shows you how to make counseling ministry unique to your church, not borrowed and artificially applied, but intrinsic to the God-given vision and biblical mission of the local body of believers. The result is a thoroughly biblical book that provides rich material for ministers, seminary students, and people interested in developing care-giving ministries. This is a must book for anyone interested in counseling and the church.
"Bob Kellementrainer and coach extraordinairehas a simple goal: he wants to see your churchs one-to-one ministry transformed. The way he does that is by giving clear, practical instruction along with a huge package of supplies and tools. And when you follow his coaching youll be surprised to find that the result is not so much Bobs system as it is an equipping model that is specific to your church.
So many of us long to see our churches equipped to minister the blessings of Gods Word to one another...and yet somehow it seems all too easy to get bogged down in the how. Bob Kellemen has given the church a tremendous resourceoutlining not only the how but also the why and most importantly the Who. This is a resource that will revolutionize the way your church does ministry and will give you the resources you need to offer practical help from a many-membered body serving one another and their community.
Dr. Kellemen has produced a landmark book that fills a significant vacuum in the biblical counseling literature: a comprehensive work that not only offers an exceptional overview of biblical counseling, but also provides a wise, strategic, and thoughtful guide outlining the essentials of developing a robust counseling ministry within the local church. Equipping Counselors for the Local Church has the potential to influence a massive paradigm shift in how ministry is exercised in the Body of Christ both now and in future generations.
Dr. Kellemens book fills a long-standing gap in Christian counseling and church-based ministry literature. It is an excellent resource for church leaders or counselors who are looking for practical biblical guidance, including instructions and all the necessary nuts-and-bolts, in .developing the one-to-one, personal ministry component in their churchs spectrum of care It is marvelously comprehensive and systematic, while at the same time flexible enough to apply to a variety of church personalities.
I am alarmed in our ever-increasing multiethnic urban society at how many people faithfully attend Bible believing churches with a successful external appearance while living in unbelievable personal and family dysfunction! Bob Kellemens call for and guidance towards a revolution of humble growing biblical counselors within the church is a timely resource for an urgent need.
"Bob has made it his lifes mission to equip the saints for ministry. He is a counselors counselor and someone who has gathered the best practices in biblical counseling for over two decades. He is a champion for what some call the every person ministry of speaking the truth in love. Its about time someone gave us a careful and biblical blueprint of how to develop an excellent, biblical counseling ministry in the church."

In his video trailer for the book, Dr. Kellemen states that "the audience for this book is anyone committed to and passionate about one-another ministry". Throughout this book, he uses the word "counseling" to encompass ministering the Word to one another and disciple-making, resulting in a relevant and helpful book for us all.
Dr. Kellemen's goal is to "equip equippers so that the church is saturated with Biblical counseling". He has created a simple, helpful framework to help leaders intentionally train and empower members to minister the Word to one another. He walks his readers through a Biblical study of God's mission for the Church; connecting people; helping them grow in Biblical content, Christlike character, counseling competency, and Christian community; and relational organization to bring greater glory to God.
Because Dr. Kellemen has been a pastor of three very different churches (ranging from 100-3,000 members), he doesn't have a strict one-size-fits-all approach to equipping. He establishes some basic principles that would be applicable to any size church and helps leaders walk through how to prayerfully design a structure that will best help the "unique congregation use its distinctive gift-mix to fulfill our special calling in our specific community" (pg. 41), to bring greater glory to God.
Although Dr. Kellemen's principles are basic, he is not so vague as to be unhelpful. He includes a lot of useful forms, evaluations, application questions etc. that make this almost like a workbook that leaders can utilize to set up a ministry structure. Equipping Counselors for Your Church is a comprehensive, step-by-step guide that will likely bless a lot of people.
While Dr. Kellemen's book is primarily geared towards those who are leaders within the church, there are some things that make this helpful for those who are passionate about one-another ministry. Equipping Counselors for Your Church helps the reader establish a Biblical vision for God's Church and personal ministry. There are a number of useful lists within this book including Scripture passages and doctrine/theology to study; qualifications and proficiencies to pursue, character traits to cultivate; and commonly used materials for Biblical counseling. One of my favorite features is the excellent evaluation/application questions throughout the text and at the end of each chapter.
Ultimately, Dr. Kellemen helps all types of readers to understand that:
"People with changed lives know Christ, grow in Christ, and become Christ-like disciple-makers. Changed lives occur as we apply Christ's changeless truth to help suffering people know that it's normal to hurt (sustaining) and possible to hope (healing), and as we help sinning people to know that it's horrible to sin but wonderful to be forgiven (reconciling), and supernatural to mature (guiding)" (pg. 65).
Equipping Counselors for Your Church is about growing in Christ-likeness, intentionally loving like He loved, and encouraging others to do the same for God's glory. May this book help many leaders to share a Biblical vision and enlist, equip, and empower their congregations to do the work of one-another ministry. May it also help them to build a team of people who are uniquely gifted and have a special passion for Biblical counseling to serve the body of Christ more formally. May it help all of us as we grow in Christ-likeness, becoming full of goodness, complete in knowledge, and competent to instruct one another (Romans 15:14).
*Many thanks to Dr. Kellemen for his willingness to send me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!
