Bold & Beautiful Blogger5 Stars Out Of 5This Kid's Devotional is the Real DealJanuary 7, 2020Bold & Beautiful BloggerQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"Epic Devotions" by Aaron Armstrong, is a great kids devotional, in connection with "The Gospel Project for Kids."
Each devotion includes a Bible passage to read, encouraging kids to read the Bible. Also included, are a quoted verse, the event description to establish context, foreshadowing to Christ's coming and the Gospel, and a life application section. I like that there're several options for application: an explanation of relevance to the passage and reader, a step of action, a question to challenge the reader to share the gospel, and a memory verse. The memory verse is most often from a different part of the Bible, encouraging cross-referencing and knowing God's Word in its fullness.
This kids' devotional has great illustrations, in connection with "The Gospel Project for Kids." This way, kids can grow into the devotional, if they are already familiar with the curriculum and illustrations. Each devotion is lively and biblically authentic, and includes more scriptural accounts than most devotionals for kids. This book is the real deal!
Kendra5 Stars Out Of 5great resourceNovember 29, 2019KendraA new addition to the One Big Story product line, this devotion book for children ages 8-12 is an excellent resource. I love how this series points to Jesus in every part of the Bible, from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. The text is based on the Epic storybook (also written by Aaron Armstrong) that was released earlier this year. The colorful cartoon-style graphics are taken directly from that book.
Each of the 52 devotions includes a scripture reading, a key verse, a summary of events that took place in the Bible reading, application, questions for discussion and thought, and a memory verse. Each lesson is four pages long. The biggest wild card is the scripture reading, which varies in length from a partial chapter to twenty-two chapters (the entire book of Revelation). The average is 3-10 chapters, a manageable portion for a ten year old to read in one week. My children really enjoyed the Epic storybook, and I look forward to sharing this devotion book with them when they get a little older.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher (B&H) in exchange for my review.
thechristianscribeArizonaAge: 25-34Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Beautiful Illustrations!November 28, 2019thechristianscribeArizonaAge: 25-34Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is a wonderful and beautifully illustrated devotional for kids! Wow, I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of this book. It features 52 devotions from the most popular stories of the Bible.
Each devotion has a short summary of the story, questions, a short life application and a verse to memorize.
The illustrations are amazing, I'm an adult and I loved looking through them, the kids will absolutely love it as well!
The recommended ages are 8-12 but kids as young as 5 can easily understand the devotions with an adult's explanations.
This makes for a great gift! I will be gifting this to my nephew.
I received a copy of this book from B&H in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
JSimmo195 Stars Out Of 5EPICNovember 25, 2019JSimmo19Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I am a huge fan of anything from the One Big Story range, and you'll find many of those items in my list of recommended resources, well after reading EPIC I was hugely excited when author, Aaron Armstrong (Twitter) announced that a devotion book was on the way.
When the book was released, I immediately ordered a copy. After reading and reviewing it, I gave it straight to my brother-in-law, who is 10.
The devotion book shares a near identical style with the preteen storybook, which is 100% worth checking out. What I'm interested in here, as a Children's Pastor, is to see how this resource goes about trying to engage kids. Helpfully, pages 4 and 5 contain a sort of sample key as to what to expect, ahead of the 52 devotions. These devotions carry the narrative of Scripture from beginning to end. Can you even imagine the impact this could have if a committed preteen child sat down and used this to spend time with God, one section per week, for a year?
Each devotion is spread over four pages and follows a standard pattern:
Scripture reference, encouraging kids to read it.
One key verse from the reading
An overview of the narrative of reading accompanied by pictures.
A paragraph changing the direction of thought, from isolated story to part of the one big story Jesus.
Key learning/point from the story
Thoughts/questions to consider, or an action to follow through with
A memory verse, relative to the learning
There is a lot contained within each section, and honestly I am excited to see how my brother-in-law likes the book. He loved EPIC and said he couldn't stop reading it, so I am hopeful he likes this too. Preteens are in an awkward stage of not wanting anything "childish", and want to use resources aimed at the "big kid" that they are, Aaron identified this as his focus, and from my perspective nailed it again.
FayJac5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent devotional for kids!November 21, 2019FayJacThis is a great children's devotional book. It is the story of Jesus told throughout the ages beginning from creation. It tells the Bible story and ties it in with Jesus. I am really impressed. The graphics are somewhat cartoonish and great for kids. It has life-application questions, a verse to memorize and devotional thoughts. It is great for ages 8 to 12 although my three-year-old grand-daughter enjoyed looking at the pictures and hearing some of the stories read to her.
I would recommend this book to be used as a private devotional for kids or for family devotions or reading aloud to your children. The pictures and stories and questions are engaging and insightful. It is subtitled "52 Weeks in the Story that Changed the World." I love the way it intertwines the story of Jesus throughout the Bible. I wish I had a book like this when I was a kid!
(Although a copy of this book was provided to me to review by Lifeway and B&H Kids, the opinions expressed are my own.)
