PninaPearlAge: Under 18Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Brave EnoughAugust 13, 2016PninaPearlAge: Under 18Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4Brave Enough is a book about courage. Or, rather, having just enough courage to be yourself, to follow God and do what He asks of you. Not brave like the heroes in the movies, but brave enough.
This book reminds me of the song "Brave" by Moriah Peters, where she says "I know I'm no superwoman/But impossible is possible with You." It's all about the fact that, while we're not always brave and confident by ourselves, with God we can be a little brave and do somewhat small, yet daunting, tasks and work our way up to being just a little braver, then a little more, and a little more...
I'm not an exceptionally outgoing person, so this book was encouraging since the author doesn't have a "Become Super Brave In 10 Days Or Less" approach. It's just a simple calling to not be afraid to be a little brave. The book is full of real-life stories from the author and her friends, which she uses to emphasize certain truths about bravery and trusting God. And at the end of the book, there are pages full of Bible verses about courage. I like that verses are also spread throughout the book, and she explains how each verse can draw us closer to being brave enough.
The one "problem" I had with the book was that the chapters seemed a bit long. While a very good read, I had trouble reading an entire chapter in one sitting.
What I took away from Brave Enough is that there is no such thing as a perfect life, that I can't do everything by myself, and that bravery can be quiet and a little - just enough - bravery is sometimes all you need.

Alison4 Stars Out Of 5A call to courageNovember 20, 2015AlisonQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I was drawn to the title from the moment I heard it. I feel like so much of what Jesus is teaching me these days revolves around trust and courage for what it looks like to follow him. Nicole Unice shares countless stories, from her own life, dear friends and Scripture, that all point back to the same truth: Gods love-not our own ability or goodness-is the source of our bravery and our strength. (7) She jumps deep into tender topics of how hard it is to give and receive grace and the courage it takes to do that. She talks about the courage it takes to feel feelings and honestly talk to God about what were going through. She shares about her own challenges to have courage to set boundaries and know her own limits. She speaks of the courage it takes to rest and live in such a way that there is space to hear from the Lord.
I was deeply encouraged by Nicoles writing. She provides questions and prayers as tools for response, which I appreciated as I sat with some of her words. She writes to women, but the truth she shares is a universal one: What God can do with hearts fully devoted to him! What God will do when we give him the very best of ourselves-when we abandon our wills to his way and when our full and honest hearts say, Not my will, but yours be done. This is the wellspring of our courage. This is what makes us brave. (194)

When perfectionism becomes a dictator in everyday life, when failure rears its ugly head, when going with the flow is easiest, Nicole Unice calls women to be brave and make some movement.
I appreciate an author who isnt afraid to quote others and one who uses real life examples. There are so many great quotes from this book but I cant list them all so heres just a few:
Some would paraphrase the philosopher Plato as defining courage as the ability to persevere though all emotions. (Loc 86)
Maya Angelou once said, Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you cant practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage. (Loc 134)
This is different, a courage that comes from outside of yourself but that changes you from inside your soul. This courage releases the vise grip of fear and gives you the energy and strength and heart you need to face whatever lifes got for you. (Loc 177)
Ms. Unice talks about how being brave is an option. Adversity is going to happen to everyone at some point its what we do with our adversity that makes the difference. Choosing to allow God to take the adversity we face and let those journeying steps help us to be brave.
I thoroughly enjoyed Brave Enough. Its like having a personal counselor walk you through the process and then become your cheerleader. Its a great book for women of all ages with practical insight and advice. I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Edelweiss and Tyndale Publishing in exchange for my honest opinion.
folkerta4 Stars Out Of 5Brave EnoughJuly 17, 2015folkertaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Ive got to be honest. When I first received this book I wasnt too excited. I really didnt think that I needed it. The introduction and first chapter started a bit slow but Unice reeled me in with her personal experiences and good insight into some scriptures. By the end of the second chapter I was hooked. At times it felt like te author was rambling on with no real sense of organization, but even during those times she still had a lot of good content. It wasnt a "blow me away" book, but I was still very happy with it. In fact, I will probably buy the dvd that was made to accompany this for my young adult group, because the discussion questions at the end of each chapter were really thought provoking at times.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
