Catherine Parks biographies are a winner!!!

These books (both Empowered and Strong) are a collection of short biographies of men and women in history who have made a real difference for the Kingdom of God. Their lives and testimonies are enormously inspiring. In each book, Parks shares each man or woman's battle as they fought to live their lives for the Lord and how that turned into a great witness to those around them and to us today. The books are written for younger people middle school and high school aged teens and younger than middle if you have a stronger reader in your circle. Each book has a built in study guide and can be easily used in a classroom setting.

When God is your power source He will do mighty things with your life. None of these men or women ever sought to be famous or influential. They merely surrendered their lives to Christ and sought to be obedient to His teachings.

All of these men and women had one thing in common Jesus changed their lives to matter for Him and His Kingdom. Each beautiful story is closed out with a section to show teens how they can live lives of courage and faithfulness for the Kingdom of God. There are questions for group discussion with each chapter, as well.

Each biography has a beautifully hand drawn black and white picture of the man or woman at the beginning of each chapter. There is also a quote from each under the pictures.

These would be fantastic books to study with your Sunday School or youth groups. They could certainly be used in a homeschool setting or with your sons and/or daughters in your home otherwise. I think these are valuable resources to encourage the young people in your life to stand for something that matters to live separately from the world and to bring glory and honor to God in their lives no matter how insignificant they may think they might seem right now. In God's plan we all matter and have a purpose.

This collection of short biographic sketches of 11 women who lived through the ages, including modern times, is quite well written with their young audience in mind.

The stories are interestingly written and will surely engage the heart and mind of the young girl. The goal of the book is to show how in the face of unfathomable situations that portend evil, destruction, harm, and emotional harm the individual can be strong and can take a stand for that which is right.

The Biblical Esther is, of course, included and she is representative of the Biblical woman of strength whose story is told. The two ten Boom sisters, Corrie and Betsie, who were strong during World War II in the horrors of German concentration camps are included. Some whose names I had never heard are in this group of 11 women but whose stories shine with strength and staying power.

I highly recommend this non-fiction book for all young girls to read. Age appropriateness: 8-14 years.

DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from B&H Publishing Group's book review program. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.

Catherine Parks effortlessly weaves short stories about these women that leaves me ready to research their lives. And at the end of each chapter are questions and Scripture and encouragement that we can be just as effective as these women. These are women who faced persecution simply because they believed in Jesus Christ and they didn't back down. That's FAITH. To know torture, prison, starvation is coming yet to stand strong in the faith and not deny Jesus. We are called to this level of faith even now. Granted some of us may live in a country where Christianity is accepted, even as it is twisted to fit others agendas. So many more of us live in countries where Christianity is not accepted and to believe is to be persecuted. And we must stand strong and support those in those countries where their faith can mean torture and persecution.

Now mind you this is a book for preteens & teens, it is just as good for adults as well. That's how well written it is. I am enjoying learning about these women, and am looking forward to each of my kids learning about these women as well.

    {FYI: I received this book for FREE from the publisher in exchange for my HONEST opinion.}

    A Must-Read for Girls!

I grew up absolutely loving to read biographies, and that has remained the same for me ever since. So, naturally, when the opportunity arose to read and review "Empowered", Catherine Parks' new book about 11 women in history, I jumped at the chance!

What is so neat about this book is that, even though it is deep and rich theologically and historically, it is actually marketed as being juvenile nonfiction, making it a resource I cannot wait to share with my daughter once she is a bit older. Young girls need to learn about the amazing women in history who have followed God in strong, brave, world-changing, surrendered, visionary, love-filled ways. And this book is exactly the resource girls today need. It provides the perfect balance between being a book that is all about girl power and man-bashing and being a book that only portrays females as being helpful in the kitchen or nursery. Instead, it is a book that reveals woman's nature as being an image bearer of God equal to man, able and called to do great things specifically through the power of God, not her own "inner power". This is a needed message in our day, to be sure!

The 11 women this book covers (as well as the character qualities we learn from them!) are as follows:

    Esther Ahn Kim True Strength

    Sophie Scholl Seeking Justice

Corrie ten Boom Loving the Unlovable

    Betsie ten Boom Gratitude

Pandita Ramabai Fearing God, Not Man

    Elisabeth Elliot Obedience

    Phillis Wheatley Using Your Talents

    Joni Erickson Tada Living Abundantly

    Fanny Crosby Kindness

    Charlotte Forten Grimke Godly Ambition

    Annie Armstrong Working Faithfully

There are so many features I love about this book, not the least of which is the way each chapter ends with questions to consider and a short Bible study time. I also can't help but love the biographical illustrations, as well, as they were drawn by my very talented friend, author-illustrator, Breezy Brookshire.

If you want your daughter to grow up with a love for history and God's hand in it, as well as the character qualities listed above, this book is the resource for her! I highly, highly recommend it.

    God Can Use You Too!

This book is about how God shaped the lives of 11 women and is written for young girls to encourage them that God can shape their lives and use them too. It is a very interesting and well-written book and I would really encourage girls to read it. It covers the lives of Fanny Crosby, Bessie and Corrie Ten Boom, Annie Armstrong, and other women who influenced many people.

Each chapter has a theme such as gratitude, obedience, etc., and ends with a section applying that to your own life, some questions to really dig in, and then a verse.

I was really impacted by reading the lives of missionaries and other biographies when I was younger and I think this will be very good for girls to read. The excerpts are not long, and this book could even be used as a devotional. If you have young women in your life and think they would read it, this would be a good investment in their lives.

(Please Note: Although a copy of this book was given to me to review by B&H and Lifeway, the opinions expressed are my own.)
