Product Description

In this incredible debut novel comes the richly entertaining story of Ella of Frell, who at birth was given the gift of obedience by a fairy. Ella soon realizes that this gift is little better than a curse, for how can she truly be herself if at anytime anyone can order her to hop on one foot, or cut off her hand, or betray her kingdom'and she'll have to obey? Against a bold tapestry of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella's quest to break the curse once and for all and discover who she really is is as sharply funny as Catherine, Called Birdy, as richly poignant as Beauty, and has all the marks of a classic in the making. Recommended for ages 8 and up, 232 pages, softcover. A 1998 Newbery Honor Book.

Publisher's Description

How can a fairy's blessing be such a curse?

At her birth, Ella of Frell was given a foolish fairy's gift—the "gift" of obedience. Ella must obey any order given to her, whether it's hopping on one foot for a day or chopping off her own head!

But strong-willed Ella does not tamely accept her fate. She goes on a quest, encountering ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, fairy godmothers, and handsome princes, determined to break the curse—and live happily ever after.

I was eleven years old when I first read this book. It was the very first book I ever checked out from the library so that alone makes it something big to me. That is not why I decided to buy it though. I absolutely loved this book. Love this book! It was the book I like to think really awoke my imagination. It was full of thrilling adventure, sweet romance, and a bunch of laughs. It doesn't have a big Christian lesson behind it but there are nonetheless, some wonderful lessons you can learn from it.

This book is a book I definitively will be buying for my - God willing - daughter one day. I loved it and I am sure you will too!

This review was written for Ella Enchanted, Movie Edition, Softcover.
The book is very good. The movie doesn't follow the first book though. Instead of trying to kill the prince like in the movie, Ella breaks it by refusing to marry him after he told her too. (He didn't know about the spell.) After the spell broke everyone lived happily ever after. I would suggest reading the first book and then watching to movie.

What a fun, imaginative twist on the Cinderella story! The characters are well-drawn, the dialogue convincing and often hilarious; and while it has no deep Christian themes, Ella Enchanted is a fun, lighthearted story that parents can feel comfortable with.

A princess tale like no other. Ella based on Cinderella struggles with a magical case of obedience. The whole story is fun and enchanting. With a colorful cast of charecters, answering questions about the original tale in such a detailed manner. More then anyting,I liked how honest the romance in this book was (not mushy or fake). And the fairy godmothers are a story in themeselves!

Ella has been cursed at birth, a curse in which whatever she is told to do she must do, if she was told to cut off her hand she would have to do it. While she falls in love with Prince Char, she fights to break the curse. And her two evil step-sisters are not much of a help. Will Ella Be able to break her curse in time to marry her love, Prince Char?
