Easy Lessons for Teaching Word Families, Grades K-2

Easy Lessons is a practical guide for teachers that links phonemic awareness (hearing sounds in words) with phonics (the visual details of print). The first steps into making this important link need to be made with modeling and coaching. This hands-on activity provides systematic lessons that improve spelling, reading, phonemic awareness and phonics. In about 20-minute lesson, students manipulate their own letters to make words having frequency word patterns. The group later sorts these for more common patterns and reads and writes more words using the sounds they have just practiced. The link to word pattern is further reinforced in the context of nursery rhymes.
