Publisher's Description

"Twenty-somethings once faithfully attended church. What made them stop? While most said they still believe that the Bible is God's Word, they also said that the idea that the earth is millions of years old was one thing that caused them to doubt the bible? The crumbling foundation of the church takes a devastating toll on future generations. Therefore, churches must reclaim the historical truth found in Genesis and apply the Bible's authority to every area of life."
-Ken Ham, President
Answers in Genesis

As the modern Church struggles to find a place of relevancy for a new generation that already has massive demands on its time and attention, more and more young people raised in the Church are leaving it - failing to find the answers to their questions of faith and life, beset with doubts raised by issues that the Church chooses not to address. Opting to skirt the controversy of Genesis as literal history, the biblical authority of the Holy Word is called into question and reduced to a collection of mere stories. More popularly considered an issue for schools or in the public realm, the conflicting views on the age of the earth also remain a pivotal issue within the Church - as it has for over two centuries.

  • Was the Creation week literally six days?
  • Does science really point to an old earth?
  • Does the issue really matter for Christians?
  • Should this issue even be discussed within the Church?

Join authors Dr. Jason Lisle and Tim Chaffey as they put forth a case against an old-earth interpretation of Scripture. A comprehensive biblical, theological, and scientific critique of old-earth creationism, the book presents its compelling testimony in layman's terms to create a powerful debate that leads to unquestionable truth.

Author Bio

Tim Chaffey is a writer and editor with Answers in Genesis. He has spent five years as a pastor and associate pastor, in which he taught youth ministry, adult Sunday School, and a weekly theology class in addition to regular preaching duties. He has also taught high school Bible and science classes for six years. Tim earned a Th.M. in Church History and Theology from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in May 2011, after successfully defending his thesis on "The Sons of God and the Nephilim" (available on Kindle). In 2008, he earned a Master of Divinity degree (summa cum laude) specializing in Apologetics and Theology.

Tim also holds a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Science in Biblical and Theological Studies. He is the founder and director of Midwest Apologetics, a ministry dedicated to defending the word of God from the beginning to the end. Tim specializes in the creation v. evolution controversy (and the corresponding age of the earth battle). He is especially interested in the theological nature of the debate. This interest led to the publishing of his first book, Old-Earth Creationism on Trial: The Verdict Is In (co-authored with Jason Lisle, Ph.D. in Astrophysics).

Tim is also a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia in July 2006. He has been in full remission since September 2006. Tim is a popular speaker and often teaches on topics related to apologetics, theology, and worldviews in churches, camps, and schools. He has been a guest on numerous radio programs and speaks regularly at the Creation Museum in Northern Kentucky. Most recently he served as co-editor of the new Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions Volume 2 with Ken Ham and Bodie Hodge.

Dr. Jason Lisle is a research scientist, speaker, and planetarium director for Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum. He holds bachelor of science degrees in physics and astronomy from Ohio Wesleyan University, as well as a master’s and PhD in Astro-physics from the University of Colorado in Boulder. As a creation scientist Dr. Lisle effectively communicates a broad range of topics from in-depth presentations of distant starlight, Einstein's relativity, and problems with the big bang to topics from astronomy and general science to apologetics and dinosaurs. Dr. Lisle has authored a number of books which include: Taking Back Astronomy, The Ultimate Proof of Creation, Old-Earth Creationism on Trial, and his brand new title releasing in April 2012 The Stargazer’s Guide to the Night Sky.

Old-Earth Creationism on Trial: The Verdict Is In authors, Tim Chaffey and Jason Lisle, make the convincing argument that creation was completed in six twenty-four hour days. Their values are in opposition to the popular scientific belief that the earth is billions of years old. The authors stress that Scripture is trustworthy and should not be reinterpreted to compliment faulty scientific opinions.

The book contains a broad range of topics dealing with both theological concerns and scientific examinations. The authors communicate firmly and with conviction, without demeaning those with differing opinions. The book is structured in such a way that novices are able to follow the logic and handle the scientific language.

Tim Chaffey earned a BS and a MA in biblical and theological studies. He also holds a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in theology and apologetics from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. His co-author, Jason Lisle, earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and astronomy from Ohio Wesleyan University. He received his master’s degree and PhD in astrophysics from the University of Colorado. He is currently a research scientist with Answers in Genesis Ministries.

Romans 1:20 states, “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” The vastness of creation is a testimony to the power and glory of God. The authors share the foundational message of a six-day creation and a Sabbath day rest for a purpose. It is evident that the authors’ motivations are to bring glory to God and to challenge anyone holding to the old-earth view.

Although the authors mention some of the current held beliefs of old-earth followers, they quickly negate those beliefs. If the reader desires an unbiased overview of this subject, this book is not recommended. The authors remind the Christian community of its duty to educate itself about such subjects. This debate over the age of the earth is heated and is at the forefront of scientific research. It will be beneficial for Christians to educate themselves, and this book will introduce the topic effectively. – Tamara Peachy, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
