Several of the writings appear for the first time in English. The first three volumes are a complete collection of the historical writings of the Fathers, whose permanent value as the primary sources is universally acknowledged. Other volumes contain the works of eminent figures in early Christian history, such as Athanasius, Jerome, and Ambrose. The series concludes with the canons and decrees of the seven ecumenical councils, as well as canons of local synod with ecumenical acceptance. The "Second Series" is edited by Philip Schaff, eminent church historian and professor at Union Theological Seminary, NY, and Henry Wace, Principal of Kings College, London.

Albert B.5 Stars Out Of 5At long last!January 2, 2017Albert B.Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I bless the good Lord for making the dream, a reality. I have other Phillip Schaff writings and i trust these, to lock steps with those. I have been greatly blessed in reading about most of the early fathers however not as copious as layed out in these 38 volumes. I pray for the Spirit's enabling to devor these pages into my spirit. This generation needs to be greatly informed by the Scriptures and the other patchments inorder not to be deformed by modernized lithurgies and homilies.

They arrived on time well packaged with each book individually shrink-wrapped. I don't know that I will ever read every page in all 34 volumes, but they are excellent reference works. They look good and the quality of printing and binding is excellent.
Dan5 Stars Out Of 5Surprisingly great investmentAugust 26, 2014DanQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I bought the whole set, so this is just a part of the whole, but after thumbing through and stopping at various points in the volumes as my eyes caught something, I realized how much of a real treasure trove these books are. For any Christian History student who might like to teach someday, or anyone with the time to really get a grasp on the writings of the early saints, these are awesome.

Tell us a little about yourself. Hello, I am Reverend Sylvia Torrey a Biblical Storyteller, who is an Adjunct Professor, Maricopa County Community College District. As an ordained Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, (Tanner Chapel AMEC in Phoenix, AZ), there are numerous responsibilities of biblical teaching, program development, and walking beside others as directed by the Holy Spirit. I am currently working on a book that looks deeply at the period between the resurrection and the ascension. My prayer is to have it available within the next year.
What was your motivation behind this project? The primary motivation was several years ago when I was asked to preach a short sermon relating to one of the sayings of Christ between his resurrection and ascension. As I begin to study this time period, the magnitude of the resurrection and the necessity of his tarrying here for forty days made a vivid impression upon me. the more I studied the greater became my hunger and thirst for the righteousness imparted by this word. I am compelled to keep going until this project is completed.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? My prayer is that all who have an opportunity to read this book will find in it what I have found. I am praying that they will see the frailty of humanity is covered by Divine intervention. I am hoping that they will see God's task for humanity as they bring together His purpose in their mind and in their heart. This is what I have found as I continue the study and writing of this book.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? This project has been such an awe instilling work. Often I have become sidetracked as I uncover something new in the text. I must dwell upon it and uncover all that the Scripture is giving me. Whenever I am working on this project time just seems to evaporate. I cannot spend enough time researching and studying for this project.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I have so many favorites. My favorites in poetry swing from Langston Huges to William Shakespeare, yet the Psalms exceeds them all. However, in my early years of studying scripture, Matthew Henry was an overwhelming influence. Once I was introduced to the Early Church Fathers, I fell in love again with Augustine, Chrysostom, Origen. Not only was I influenced by their writings but also by any biographical information available on these scholars. A more recent biblical commentator who is a favorite source of reference is John Goldingay, Let me not negate the influence of my Alma Mater, Fuller Theological Seminary, Phoenix, AZ Campus. Tom Parke,r the Director at this site, is a phenomenal man of God. One can not resist growing and developing in the environment of spiritual nurturing that he promotes at Fuller Southwest.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: All that happens in our lives is because God allows it through his Will. Whenever he gives us a project it is best to remain on task. Many things will arise to take you off the course, but remember it is only a test. Stay focused and He will see you through to a successful completion.
