What a great, action-packed story! This novel is the first book in the Elite Guardians Collection series, which is connected to and a continuation of Lynette Eason's Elite Guardians series. I could not set this book down once I started reading it.

The main characters, Christina, Grey, and Grey's military working dog, Boss, were phenomenal! I liked that Christina and Grey were both very skilled from their time in the military, yet both of them carried guilt from events in their pasts.

Grey was such a compelling character. He was wounded while in service and is confined to a wheelchair. He was a great combination of strength and ability and definitely someone who had worked hard to adapt to his life with a disability. Grey also had things he struggled with emotionally due to his limitations. His humanity came through vividly in this story.

I loved that Christina saw Grey as a man and not as a man in a wheelchair. There were times she even forgot about the wheelchair and instead of it making Grey upset, it was refreshing for him to be around someone who didn't pity him or question his ability to do something.

The dog, Boss, was a wonderfully written character, as well. He was the perfect addition to the story and pivotal in their search for whoever was behind all the death and mayhem.

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wooooowwwwwwww!!!!! And that right there is my review because it seems impossible to articulate anything else...give me a minute...okay, I think I'm ready to gush!

There is everything to love about this novel and nothing to hate about it -- except maybe it was over too soon? I savoured my listening experience (yay narrator Bethanne Reid!) from the very first gripping scene. Talk about high stakes tension! And Christina is some kind of ninja guardian with her cat-like grace and ability to leap buildings in a single bound (that might be a slight exaggeration, but it feels like she could if she put her mind to it.)

This heroine is socially awkward, more out of a desire to protect herself from engaging, fearful of being judged and found wanting. And her fellow Elite Guardians call her out on it and I love them for that. But for all her tough, military precision, she can turn into a babbling ditz around Grey when he puts on the charm...which is like all the time when he isn't yelling at her. :-)

I appreciated seeing a disabled hero featured in this story. Grey's internal struggles along with his alpha male persona really upped the tension and attraction (on my part and the heroine's.) And the relationship he has with the real star of this novel -- Boss, military K-9 extraordinaire -- is so much fun! Especially when Boss starts hanging out with Christina more than Grey. lol

Love the touches of humour Angelo brings to the intense plot, creating wonderful breathing moments in between high-action, danger-fuelled situations.

And the romance is just what you'd expect from two opinionated ex-military alpha types used to calling the shots. Fireworks doesn't begin to cover it! (Grinning madly while fanning vigorously.)

High-stakes suspense paired with high-octane romance equals high quality read (or listen) satisfaction.

DRIVING FORCE is a great read for those who enjoy romantic suspense with a military and national security aspect. The suspense and tension build throughout the story to a climatic ending, which made for an entertaining read. The best part was the hero and his dog. They made this book. Recommended to those who like endearing characters, a strong faith element, sweet romance and suspense.

I couldn't help completely falling in love with the hero and his dog as well as their protector. Grey and Boss were definitely my favorites though and were the reason this story won me over. I liked that all the characters were fairly complex and likable. The story moved at a good pace and had enough action, suspense and romantic chemistry to keep me engaged. There was also a faith element weaved throughout the story that I didn't feel was pushy or unrealistic. I thought the story was well balanced between all the aspects. The romance didn't overtake the suspense and vice versa. I will say that the romance had some really great chemistry and was my second favorite thing in this story after Grey and his dog.

I did also have some issues with the story. The heroine, Christina, makes some pretty big mistakes for her background and that didn't feel consistent with her character. There could have still been mistakes, but I felt that particularly the last one was a bit of a plot point forced into the story instead of something that fit in naturally. There were also other things that didn't work for me as far as logically and tactically for this type of suspense where there is a group of characters in security detail, bodyguards, military and police. I just had to suspend belief a lot or pretend that characters with these backgrounds would do things so different (and kind of wrong). I've read some really good suspense and this had the potential to be good, but fell flat in that area. The ending also really dragged and there were things included that were unnecessary.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Definitely huge points for dog lovers here. Boss literally took the show along with his handler and partner, Grey. Christina was also a good character. The suspense and a few other things could have used more development, but it all worked out in the end. An overall enjoyable read!

    Content: Some violence, but clean.

What a fabulous start to a new series brought to us from Sunrise Publishing!! I was so excited to dig in, as suspense is one of my favorite go-to genres. Kate Angelo - welcome to my must read author list. You have done a fantastic job writing a book that I could not keep my eyes away from.

So many things I liked about this book, but perhaps my favorite it the fact that we have a "disabled" character. I put it in quotations because to me, Grey was a regular guy who really didn't let his disability totally get the best of him, and tried to live as normal a life as possible. Sure, there were some moments, which provided some great character growth later. But overall he was just a swoony hero. I'm not really sure which got to me more - his protectiveness over Christina or Boss. And Boss! I love having dogs in stories, but I really have a soft spot for vets. Oh goodness I enjoyed when he was around!

The other thing Angelo did was provide a great plot twist! I kind of wondered a time or two throughout the book if this plot twist may come, but then she'd throw me off by putting some other aspects in the story. And then BAM - there it was. It was so well written, and really knocked my socks off. But here's the thing - I had empathy for this person. And I can't say why or how (spoilers), but I wasn't real mad like I am with other bad guys. Having empathy for the bad guy is a tough sell, but Angelo managed to pull it off like a champ.

I have three pieces of advice. 1 - read this book. 2 - put Kate Angelo on your watch list. and 3 - make sure you watch for the rest of this series to come out. I promise it will be worth your while!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
