The Loving Kitchen is a collection of comforting recipes straight from the kitchen of popular food blogger LeAnn Rice.
You know the feeling you get when youre an overnight guest in someones home, and you awaken to a hot-off-the-griddle breakfast? Or when a coworker brings in a pan of her famous brownies to celebrate your recent promotion? Doesnt it feel great when dinner at the neighbors house includes multiple courses of scratch-made recipes and conversation that lingers beyond dessert and that last cup of coffee?
For many of us, these are the moments in which we feel most loved. Thats the idea behind The Loving Kitchen. Get your familys day started right with LeAnns fluffy Pumpkin Spice Pancakes, or a bowl of Almond Coconut Granola and yogurt. Keep your favorite sports fans fueled through the entire game with hearty servings of Hot Sausage and Spinach Dip, or toss together a Grilled Chicken and Berry Salad for lunch with your dearest girlfriends.
Want a signature dinner you can serve on those special occasions? Stuffed Pork Tenderloin with Orange Cranberry Glaze with Creamy Smashed Baby Potatoes is the perfect meal to celebrate a milestone. LeAnns sunny narrative and ideas for bringing people together will remind you that the best meal youll ever cook is the one you prepare as an act of love.
JCMorrowsAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5What a wonderful cookbook!July 10, 2014JCMorrowsAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5I'm not sure precisely how southern LeAnn Rice is since a recipe for fried green tomatoes is conspicuously absent from "The Loving Kitchen" but she certainly understands the southern tradition of hospitality.
She talks about what hospitality is, how she does it and why she does it. She ties her messages to the readers in with beautiful scriptures and with the myriad of dishes shared with us through the pages of this southern style cookbook.
The recipes she does share are wonderful. Some of them are variations on classic favorites, some of them are a mixture of two or three different styles, techniques or recipes and some of them are her original ideas.
As I went through the pages of the book (I have this particular book on my kindle), I book-marked nearly every recipe and I was making a grocery list before I got halfway through the book. After I had said "yum" to myself half a dozen times, my kiddos were looking over my shoulder and making their own comments about which recipes they were excited to try.
The recipes are well-written and easy to follow with the added bonus of extra little tips and tricks tucked in here and there.
LeAnn also shares quite a few stories about how certain recipes came about or at what events she typically serves them - which I find incredibly useful. It always helps to have a little background or some direction when you are planning a meal or an event.
As far as the format, I acquired this as an e-book because the physical copies were all spoken for and I really wanted to check it out. I am someone who typically prefers a physical copy of a book so I don't do a lot of reading on my e-reader but I do feel I have enough experience to adequately judge the similarities and differences. This book works very well on e-reader and while, I don't think you can ever go wrong with a physical copy, a cookbook might actually be easier for some on an e-reader.
Either way you buy it, this is not a book to be missed if you enjoy good, wholesome, home cooking and some great stories to go along with them!
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
Jen PenMidwest5 Stars Out Of 5Absolutely delectable...June 18, 2014Jen PenMidwestQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5SUMMARY:
With the kitchen as the basis for love, LeAnn Rice shares recipes, thoughts, Bible verses and humor to bring family and friends together around the table. Nothing overly fancy but really good, delicious, "do-able" recipes including breakfast items, breads, salads and soups, sandwiches, entrees, sides and of course_desserts!! With beautiful pictures and ideas for gathering people together, The Loving Kitchen is absolutely delectable!!
A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
No need to ask "what's for dinner" anymore_I have found the perfect cookbook for family dinners, potlucks and weekend get-togethers. I appreciated the humor and wit throughout the book as well as the personal introduction to each recipe, tips for cooking, thoughts and verses scattered in the pages and the cautions with some (especially about not keeping the really, really delicious ones all for yourself). Read as an eBook, I am sure this book is gorgeous as a print copy and would make the perfect gift. Southern cooking at its best, y'all!

JennieManila, PhilippinesAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5the kitchen hacks are just invaluableJune 3, 2014JennieManila, PhilippinesAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4The commentaries of LeAnn in her book are plenty encouraging and only someone who repeatedly does the same task over and over again can truly understand how this feels. The tips, oh the kitchen hacks are just invaluable! Thank you, LeAnn! They all make sense. From now on I will not add oil to my pasta when I boil them. Apparently, this keeps the sauce from clinging to the cooked pasta. Totally makes sense. But that means I will have to use a large pot to keep the pasta moving around as it boils. :-)
As LeAnn invited her readers "to her table," she summoned us to go beyond merely serving food but lovingly being at it every time.
loreallepaAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great Down-Home CookbookMay 23, 2014loreallepaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5If there is one thing this Mama loves doing for her family, it's cooking. It's one of the ways I show them love and just how much I care about them. I have to admit though, I've worried on occasion that my way of showing them love is actually the wrong way. Nonetheless, I sure do enjoy it!
Now if you know me, you know I love me some Paula Deen. Butter, mayonnaise, gooey cakes and fried chicken sounds right up my alley. So I'm deffo not going to hate on the unhealthier recipes in this book. These recipes are easy to follow and my fam loved them!
This book reminded me a lot of Paula. The tone of it is very down-home, which I loved. LeAnn shares her take on many Southern classics, like fried chicken, grits, BBQ, and sweet potatoes. Her writing style is casual and sprinkled with humor (and y'all know I love humor), like she's talking to you right across the kitchen table. She makes you feel like you've known her forever. I don't think I've ever been more excited about a new book. This will definitely be my go-to cookbook.
What I loved the most y'all was the love and heart in this book. As I said above, I show love through cooking. In this book, I could feel the love and comfort that she associates with cooking for people. She gives the reader assurance that your meals don't have to be perfect to show that love to your family. And I assured me that I'm not the only one that shows my love that way. Whew, no need to keep stressing over it.
This book was provided to me free of charge by Book Look in return for my honest review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
