How is this for a heart pounding first line? *The click next to her ear jerked her out of a deep sleep to roll into a sitting position, a scream on her lips, her eyes on the man with the gun standing next to her.*

Lainie Jackson has gone through a terrible attack from her ex-fiance Adam, barely escaping with her life. How could he be stalking her 18 months after that horrific night? He is dead, right? With danger, suspicion, and several plot twists, I found myself questioning everything. Did Adam somehow survive? Lainie will only get to the bottom of this mystery and survive new life threatening events if she trusts Detective James Cross to help.

I like to be challenged to think when I read a suspenseful mystery, and it is even better when there is romance and more than just action. Lynette Easons portrayal of Lainie having to trust James added dimension to a well written story that I really enjoyed. I highly recommend this first book of the Lake City Heroes. Allow yourself some time. Once you start reading it you will find it difficult to stop.

"Double Take" is a romantic suspense. Lainie feels like a victim and a door mat. Her family's a mess, with her mother having a mental illness and her siblings wanting nothing to do with their parents. She wanted a normal family so badly that she initially overlooked how her fiance started to treat her. When she dumped him, he tried to kill her. She's finally recovering from that trauma when she suddenly sees Adam again. She's certain it must be someone who looks like him, only, every trace of his death is being erased. Why? Who is this man, or is it possible Adam actually survived?

James' father refused to talk with him after James became a police officer, so he had his own family problems to work through. He and his partner investigated Lainie's case while keeping her safe. The high suspense came from the deadly danger to Lainie. The main characters were capable, likable people who reacted realistically to events. James built Lainie up and showed her that she's a fighter, not a victim. They worked well together. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this exciting story.

I finished this book in one day, and have absolutely no regrets. Ah, there is so much about it that is so good! The suspense, the romance, the protective MMC and tenacious FMC, I am tempted to go reread it right now!

Lainie captured my heart from the first page, her determination to not only survive, but thrive, in the face of so much adversity. Her struggles are ones that hit close to my heart, and her growth and development are inspiring and challenging to me. I cannot wait to see her in future books in the series!

James is so protective, in a non-smothering way, and does such a good job of caring for Lainie I cannot help but swoon. He faces his problems head on, and is willing to take his own advice when it comes to family issues. The way he builds up those around him, thanking them for what they do, takes him from book boyfriend material to goals for real life.

Double Take has become an instant favorite for me, and will definitely be one of those books I reread multiple times.

I received an advanced review copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.
