Ricky Kirk5 Stars Out Of 5Highly recommendedMarch 3, 2011Ricky KirkQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5For years John Piper has called and challenged believers to 'desire God', 'don't waste our lives', and to 'hunger for God'. It only makes sense that Piper would also challenge believers not to waste their cancer, to use it to glorify God.
Don't Waste Your Cancer, is a 16 page booklet of 11 'chapters' that are brief exhortations calling us not waste our cancer were written the night before John Piper's own cancer surgery. Weaving together Scripture and his personal insight, the chapters are brief, devotion like readings that speak to the heart.
Here are a few headings: 2) We waste our cancer if we do not believe it is designed for us by God. 4) We waste our cancer if we seek comfort from our odds rather than from God. 7) We waste our cancer if we spend too much time reading about cancer and not enough time reading about God.
This booklet is sensitive, compassionate, biblical, and encouraging. Not only will it be an excellent resource for pastors, but I will also share copies with doctors, nurses, and other caregivers. While cancer is in the title, the truth and encouragement can be used for those suffering from other serious/critical diagnoses. Born out of Piper's personal experience with cancer, it is a booklet that has the ability to help many believers suffer well for the glory of God. In the words of Piper, "Until we see him, may God help us not waste our health or our cancer."

Dave the LibrarianOswego, ILAge: 45-54Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5One of the first things I read after my diagnosisMarch 3, 2023Dave the LibrarianOswego, ILAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The short chapters in this pamphlet are to the point -- and yet have a pastor's compassion.
It is adapted from and appendix in "Suffering and the Sovereignty of God" as a part of Desiring God
The chapters helped to shape my approach to the cancer journey and helped me set the expectation of reading devotional literature alongside my Bible.
