The subtitle of the book is Lessons You Never Wanted to Learn, Truths You Can't Live Without. That sums up the essence of this book quite well. Laura Story and her husband, Martin, learned in a most difficult way that God does not fix everything. But He does teach us some of the most valuable lessons as we go through the valley of brokenness. Too many people crumble and fold at the first sign of trouble, but not Laura and Martin. They were still practically on their honeymoon when serious trouble hit in the form of a brain tumor that could have ended Martin's life. As in the case of so many others, what seemed to be a major tragedy to them, their family, and their close friends proved to be something that God has used for His glory and for the benefit of numerous others who have heard this story and have heard Laura sing and speak. Blending their story with the stories of people in the Bible who were broken, she helps us see that God is always working to make us into what He wants us to be even as we view our broken dreams and lives lying on the floor. Weaving all of this together she shows the fallacy of the myths we accept so readily and points us to the truth God wants us to understand. I have heard her song, Blessings, from time to time, but it will have much greater meaning to me now when I hear it, knowing the great brokenness out of which it was born.

This book is an excellent resource for those times in your life that God just doesn't make sense. The author is very real and honest and concludes each chapter with spiritual wisdom.

    it was amazing

There are so many things that I could relate to in this book especially regarding loss. I loved how utterly transparent Laura is regarding her's and Martins story.

My favorite quote is this "To be better in our brokenness isn't to remove the brokenness; it's to remove the selfishness, pride, impatience, or other sinful behaviors we blame on the brokenness. When we stop blaming our situation on the brokenness, we begin to see that the brokenness is a trial designed specifically for us."

I am not sure exactly what I expected to learn from When God Doesn't Fix It when I first decided to read it, but obviously the Holy Spirit was already working in my heart. I have spent the last 2 years questioning God's love for me, and even sometimes in isolation because I couldn't bear to go through pain again.

This book has helped me realize that I need to share my story with other people because someone else just might need to hear my words to help them in their brokenness, and in turn I could be a Blessing to them.

This is an amazing book. I didn't want to put it down! Laura Story (composer/musician) takes us along with her on the journey she had before, during and after her husband's brain tumor. Her chapter on "Why?" is one of the best dissertations I have read on that question. I felt the book was completely worthy of a summer Bible study I lead at my church. AND there IS an accompanying 6-session DVD and study guide. Definitely NOT a disappointment!
