Tim5 Stars Out Of 5Why don't we all build one big church? Denominations, really do we need them?August 7, 2017TimQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5If you have often wondered what is the big deal about Christian churches and why they do not lay down their differences and get along, this book is for you. From the back cover it reads, " Today when many are calling for unity by glossing over major theological differences, Lutzer revsists those differences and shows not only how those differences came about but also why such divisions were neccesary."
I have described the issues brought up in the context one might be if they were playing one side, and conversing with a friend who belonged to a different denomination...
Evangelical vs non- Evangelical issues:
the diety and humanity of Christ
the sovereignty of God
Within the evangical community itself:
predestination or free will
eternal security
Evangelical vs Catholic or Lutheran, Methodist, Anglican, Weslyan, etc
infant baptism
the sacramants (i.e. The Lord's Supper)
Evangelical vs Catholic
the worship of Mary
justification by faith or works
the canon of Scripture
Lutzer is evangelical. So it is no surprise that at the end of each chapter he summarizes with a flavor of evangelical beliefs on these issues. However, in working to that conclusion he spent the chapter doing what many before him failed to do...he wrestles with common questions, affirms the validity of those questions raised, shows the scriptures people counter with...what battles from early church leaders were fought over this...and presented a solid case. In other words, evangelical beliefs are not merely preached from the gate. It has been put to a rigorous test. It also is done concisely- all those 9 hot issues in 247 pages.
You will come away with a greater understanding why denominational differences are needed. One particular denomination has a slogan to, "unite in essentials and dialogue in differences," this book will help you dialogue in those differences.

Dr Lutzer is concise and graceful in his presentation. This has helped me better understand and engage my Catholic friends.
The last few chapters on pre destination and free will really promoted group discussion and questioned my understanding.
