Do You Believe? is a very good movie, and definitely gives us all something to think about. I thought the acting was very good. I've heard some people say the movie is racist. I disagree. The street preacher who started this whole ball rolling was black, brave and obviously very effective. The grandmother who raised her grandsons to live right - and was trying to get them back on the right path? Black. The person who jumped in front of another person to take a bullet so it wouldn't hit the other person? Black. One of the biggest heroes in the movie who risked his life in an attempt to save others from certain death? Hispanic. The young woman who ran away from home so she wouldn't be forced to abort her baby? Hispanic. The man with the bag of money that I'm sure he didn't come by legally? White. And one of the good guys in the movie is white, but he's also an ex-con.

So I say the movie isn't racist. But if I had to guess, I would say it was written by a MALE, and one who doesn't think too highly of women. Why?

First, all the husbands in this movie want to serve God and "do the right thing". All their wives DON'T - and even oppose their husband's good intentions in some cases. Example: Husband saw a very pregnant homeless young woman and wanted to bring her home out of the cold. Wife refused to have her in their home. Example: Older couple had an empty bedroom many years after the death of their daughter. Husband wanted to put away the dead daughter's things and invite someone homeless to stay in her room. Wife DIDN'T want to, but didn't refuse. Example: Husband and wife volunteered for first time serving at a soup kitchen. Husband thought it was great. Wife's comment: "First time. Last time."

An EMT (male) did everything he could medically for a man trapped under a huge heavy tank and who was possibly very close to death. The EMT then shared Christ with this unsaved man. The trapped man's heart was softened and he became a believer. His very atheist wife arrived on the scene and, discovering what had happened, angrily hired an attorney to sue the EMT, and the city who employed him, claiming the EMT had used his position of authority to push his religion down a trapped man's throat, etc etc. The EMT's kindly boss (male of course) said the city would defend him at their expense if he wrote an apology saying he had made a grievous mistake, he wasn't using his head when he did it, and it would never happen again. The boss said he would even write it for the EMT. The EMT said he couldn't do that. The surprised boss said if he refused, the city would have no choice but to wash their hands of him and he was on his own to pay an attorney and, if he lost, which his boss assured him he would, he would lose everything he owned. The EMT did not want to lie and say he had made a mistake and that he would never do it again because he knew he would. However, his wife pressured him to say whatever his boss wanted him to say, lie or not.

The attorney that the angry, atheist wife hired to sue the EMT couldn't wait to take the EMT for everything he owned, agreeing that what the EMT did was horrible. Guess which gender the mean lawyer was? If you guessed female, you are correct.

A single person with an efficiency apartment gave up his/her apartment and slept outside on a bench in the cold to give a homeless mother and young child a warm bed. Was the single person male or female? If you guessed male, you are correct.

A young man, against his will, had just been pressured by his brother into being involved in committing a crime. The young man wanted to change and live right, God's way, but his brother was threatening him. Running from the police after the crime, he dashed into a church. A member of the church who was in the vestibule, seeing the police coming down the street, guessed they were after the young man who had just dashed in, and kindly invited him in to the service and seated him where he would not be noticed if the police entered the church. The kind person? A man. Surprised? Me neither.

Couldn't there have been just ONE scenario where the wife wanted to do something good and her husband didn't want to? Or couldn't the mean attorney have been a man? Or the kind person in the vestibule of the church a woman? I guess not.

So, why the good rating? Because, in spite of the obvious gender bias, it is still a very good movie with an excellent message every Christian should hear. Me, at the top of that list. Have a box of tissues beside you. You'll need them.

P.S. I just discovered it was written by TWO men - Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman

I ordered a DVD movie of "DO YOU BELIEVE?" and found it to be one of the best Christian movies I have ever seen. So, as Christ told us to be "fishers of men," I ordered 12 more DVDs of that movie to use as "bait" and pass them out to anyone I might meet who needs to become a believer. I then ordered many DVDs of "A CASE FOR CHRIST" and "GOD IS NOT DEAD" which is terrific for college students to watch. I think these movies will be much better than any Christian tracts I might pass out. They are all powerful movies that truly touch the heart!

Wow! This was an excellent show for a display of what is possible with Lord Jesus Christ. It doesn't mean everything will be "perfect," but it does mean that all things will work for the good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. Slaves can be set free. Hungry can be satisfied. Hearts can be changed. People can be healed. Lives are changed when Jesus is followed. Hallelujah!
