This year our 5th daughter used the D.I.V.E. Biology CD-Rom curriculum by Dr. David E. Shormann. Four of our other daughters have also used this same curriculum with great results. After researching many curriculums, we purchased this curriculum due to the CD-Rom lecture format, labs, and the ability to choose the resource text (we chose Apologia). We wanted our children to learn to take lecture notes and study and test taking skills. The curriculum prepared each of our four older daughters for college level science and lab work. Dr. Shormann delivers what is stated on the front of the curriculum, "A digital video curriculum that teaches college preparatory biology from a Christian worldview." This curriculum is challenging, as it gives the student an upper grade education that some may find intimidating, if they do not keep in mind that that this is preparing the student for college level work and can even be used in preparation for CLEP testing. Our daughter who just finished this course told me that this class was "challenging me to think more vividly about how intricate God's Creation is. Though it took time and application, this course was definitely worth the energy. D.I.V.E Biology was a hearty course, and I fully enjoyed it as it gave me a better appreciation for science, the world around me, and my Creator." Even though I received a copy of the lab book to review, I believe that this curriculum is priced competitively and is a great value. I would highly recommend this curriculum for students who are preparing for college level work.

I was very excited about this program when I bought the program. After about the 12th week of the program, the lectures dwindled down quite a bit. The reading list did not always help you answer the review questions. My son had to google for the answers, which was very time consuming. We've called to ask about a specific assignments where the reading list didn't help with any of the questions at all, the lady didn't know the answer either. She had to call and ask the professor. My son begged me to have him just do the Apologia Biology and the Human Anatomy books instead. He has always enjoyed reading the Apologia textbooks. He felt the writer was with him, conversing biology in the living room. I wished I had listened to him. We are passed the date for a refund, and we've wasted a 1/2 year of learning time.

I had high expectations for this, hoping to use it as a supplement for the Abeka material. Soon after purchasing, I found it can only be used alone, with the Abeka and internet reading to supplement. Very difficult to use as I have to make my own tests and vocab lists. The lectures are the only thing your student can refer back to. They learn how to take lecture notes which is good. Overall, its above their heads, time consuming, and not teacher friendly. I would only recommend this for the dissections videos. It does not follow the text, so cannot be interchanged.

I thought I would try this curriculum with my daughter who has always done very well in Science. We tried this curriculum to only be disappointed. It is nice to have labs (lacked clear explanations on some formulas) on video, especially with a limited budget; however, it seemed to lack appeal in the lectures. We switched over to just using Apologia Biology, which my daughter loves the Apologia series (should have known to stick with what works),because Apologia is so in depth and puts science in an easy to understand format.
