Product Description

A.W. Tozer once wrote, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." Simply put, our everyday lives, our interactions with others, and even our self-perceptions are impacted by the image we hold of God. Unfortunately, the way we view our perfect God has been twisted by the imperfect relationships we have had with our earthly fathers. Having spoken to countless teens and adult men and women who struggle to reconcile the concept of their heavenly father with the reality of their earthly one, John Bishop's heart aches to help those with "daddy issues" overcome their spiritual and emotional wounds in order to truly love God and others.

Publisher's Description

God is not a bigger version of your earthly father.
When you hear the word "father," do you think of someone who is loving…or angry? Someone who is pleased with you…or constantly disappointed? Someone who is always available…or someone who is too busy, preoccupied, or distant? When you think of "Father God," what images come to mind?
Regardless of the type of father you grew up with—or without—it is likely that your view of God is influenced by the relationship you had with your father. Author John Bishop wants to help you discover that God is not just like your dad. Instead, God is the Father revealed in Scripture, where the truth is clear. God is a father who is:
•  always there
•  up close and personal
•  fully pleased
•  in complete control
•  completely safe
Filled with biblical insight and practical tools for reflection, healing, and restoration, God Distorted will enable you to break free from the lies of the enemy and see your heavenly Father as He truly is.

Editorial Reviews

"John Bishop tears away those misconceptions, distorted views, and protective walls we have in the way of a dynamic relationship with God. By highlighting how significantly the relationship with our earthly father distorts our view of our heavenly Father, God Distorted leads readers on a path of healing and better understanding of God the Father."
—Mark Batterson, New York Times best-selling author of The Circle Maker

"John Bishop writes from his personal life and his years as a pastor to describe the incredible importance of accepting our Father’s love into the deep places of our lives. So many of our challenges come back to how we view God, and John clears the way for us to see God in all of his power, love, and fame. This is a powerful book and a great resource."
—Jud Wilhite, author of Pursued and senior pastor of Central Christian Church, Las Vegas

"A. W. Tozer asserted, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." God Distorted helps us discover and replace the warped perceptions with God’s perfections. Writing with great vulnerability out of his personal journey, John guides us to letting go the ’daddy damaged’ idols so we can experience the joy that comes with knowing the heavenly Father with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Working through the book will renew love of the Father, joy in Jesus, and peace through the Spirit."
—Gerry Breshears, professor of theology, Western Seminary, Portland

"John Bishop has written a book that will bring healing, encouraging, and restoration to anyone who’s wrestled to reconcile their earthly father with our heavenly Father. This is a book that will breathe hope and life into your world."
—Margaret Feinberg (www.margaretfeinberg.com), author of Wonderstruck and Scouting the Divine

"The message of God Distorted is simple but profound: No matter how good or bad your earthly father was, you haven’t truly found home until you’re in the arms of your heavenly Father. John Bishop’s message is one of hope, healing, and restoration."
—Jim Daly, president, Focus on the Family and author of ReFocus: Living a Life that Reflects God’s Heart

"John Bishop is passionate about helping us let go of our distorted image of God and embrace Him as our perfect Father. John’s transparency about his experience as a son, a father, and a pastor will encourage you as you seek to replace broken paradigms with biblical faith."
—Steven Furtick, lead pastor, Elevation Church, Charlotte,  and author of the New York Times bestseller, Greater

"God Distorted provides insight to a hurting generation. John is very transparent in this book, and if we had more Christian leaders this transparent talking about some of these things, we would have a better church, community, and nation. We must acknowledge, accept, and work on these problems we carry within us. We must allow God to change us, and then we can help change others. I was with Pastor John Bishop and spoke at his church on Father’s Day, and following the service we had a very quick lunch—the reason being that he needed to rush off so he could spend time with his son. That was John’s priority, and it made a strong impression on me."
—Nicky Cruz, evangelist and author

"God Distorted challenges your view of God. John Bishop helps you see God for who He is, not who you imagined Him to be."
—Kerry Shook, founding pastor of Woodlands Church, Houston, and coauthor of the national bestsellers One Month to Live and Love at Last Sight

"Everyone has a view of God, a perception of who He is and what He wants in our lives. Some see Him as a loving creator; others may see Him as a detached deity. But no matter what our view of God is, we all have the same basis for our perception. In God Distorted, John Bishop helps readers peel back the layers of their past and discover the foundation of their perception of God – their experience with their earthly father. And through open, honest, and powerful examples, John helps readers discover what it takes to overcome the distortions and instead gain a clear image of God."
—Ed Young, pastor of Fellowship Church and author of Outrageous, Contagious Joy

This book is excellent in dealing with "root" issues. It boils down to the utmost importance of a father and a mother but the father truly sets the tone of life for his children. If your own father is distant, angry, abusive in your life you are paralyzed emotionally to "accept" the truth that God actually does love you. You cannot actually believe that God, whom you do not see, can love you when your father, whom you can see, hear and touch, treats you totally opposite of what you are being told God is like. I found this book to help uncover the "root" of problems and not just "surface" issues which cause you disbelief in what the Bible teaches about God. I have shared this book with a teacher who helps women dealing with the emotions of abortion and is now planning on teaching with her husband men who struggle with very emotional issues of their lives. Husband and wife parents, especially the father, has an awesome responsibility before God on how he nurtures and treats his sons and daughters. If we can say "daddy" and feel loved and respected by our earthly father we then can say "Abba Father" and know we are loved and respected by our Creator. Excellent teaching!

When one's life has been destroyed by an earthly father, it is a blessing to learn of the Best Love available to all. Upon learning of this Best Love, you will come to know and trust the God of All. I would recommend this book to anyone who has not had a godly loving father.

    Dense read but so helpful!

I've been reading God Distorted for about 2 months (off and on) and let me just start off by telling you this book is a blessing from the Lord. He has been using it to unveil parts of my heart that have been broken and in need of healing from growing up without a father active in my life. (But God the Father has been active in my life since before I was born. :) )

John Bishop tells the story of himself as a child and what growing up without a father did to his image of God the Heavenly Father. He then goes on to share his testimony of how God has helped him to get through his fears, anxieties, and hurts and how healing has come.

John is a very real and very personal author and I love that about his writing. He doesn't sugarcoat a lot and isn't afraid of stating the truth knowing that it will hurt. He includes a study guide at the back of the book that is full of Scriptures to go with many of the questions and for me I found that quite helpful and encouraging. We need to go to Truth in order to be set free from anything and God's Word is truth.

I'm not going to say that my distorted view of God is completely fixed because I think that would be a lie. I still struggle with understanding God's love for me at times and seeing Him as my caring and loving Father God, but this book definitely has gotten the ball rolling in the right direction and by God's grace I will see Him as He is (probably not ever 100% accurate this side of Heaven but definitely a lot better... it's a growing process).

This book was a dense read for me so I would say don't read through it quickly but rather slowly and let God speak to you and reveal the hurts that need healing to you. For me there were times I had to intentionally put it down and journal or just pray and that's totally okay.

One thing I got out of this book and hope you do as well is to see that God has a purpose in our pain whether it be living without an earthly father present, being abused, or just not having a very good family life. God will use that for your good and His glory. There is purpose in your pain.

*Note: I received a free copy of this book from Waterbrook Multnomah for reviewing purposes.

God Distorted: How Your Earthly Father Affects Your Perception Of God And Why It Matters, Written by John Bishop, is a book that strives to help people understand how their relationship with their earthy father affects their relationship with their Heavenly Father.

Within this publication John strives to help his readers grasp an important understanding: God is more than a larger version of our earthly fathers, more than what we have grown up to expect out of a father figure, more loving and compassionate than we could ever deserve.

This book is extremely well written and easily read by all who turn its pages. It will serve as a fantastic tool in aiding the growth and/or advancement of most fathers, and potential fathers as they walk within wonderful role of fatherhood God has placed within their lives.

This book is divided into three sections that help carry its teaching powerfully into our hearts. These sections are entitled: Our Perception, God's Perception, and Our Reflection, followed by a study guide entitled My Progression.

This book would make a wonderful gift for any expectant or current father, thus it is a recommended purchase.

I am on staff at Living Hope Church led by Pastor John Bishop. I had the honor of sharing some of my story with him that was subsequently included in God Distorted. Aside from my own story being featured, I was eager to read this book because I lead our recovery and restoration ministry and have seen pain and brokenness in the lives of men and women who have distorted views of God. As much as I was enjoying reading the book, I found myself asking how I could use this to minister to others. I didn't expect to really find anything for me as I had "dealt with my issues." But then I came to chapter 14 - "God is Fully Pleased". The words on page 89 really left me undone. I read them once, then again, and then just sat there staring at them. "Am I good enough?" The very question rocked me to the core.  At that moment, in the middle of a crowded and noisy coffee shop, I became acutely aware of God. I felt as if He put His finger on my heart and said, "Yeah, it's time to deal with this now." As I continued reading I loved the story about the elephant chained up, and the quote, "It is not the chain that binds him; it is the memory of the chain." Those words really resonated with me as I realized I have been trapped, not by something that is happening to me, but by my memories of what has happened. I have allowed the past to not only influence, but define, my future. God Distorted and those specific words have been the catalyst for amazing breakthrough in my life over the past couple of months. I believe this book will be a tool for so many people to bring healing, restoration, and freedom, even the people who think it's for "other people".
