Drawing mainly from 1 Timothy 3:1-7 as well as personal experience from being the president of a seminary, Allen constructs 10 questions that must be answered by anyone feeling that they are called to Christian ministry. What is particularly helpful in this book is the distinction that the author makes about what it means to be called to ministry. He uses three phrases: called to minister, called to ministry, called to the ministry. Every Christian is called to minister, in that he or she has been tasked to carry out the Great Commission to make disciples. This call is not only for pastors but for every person who professes faith in Christ. Some have discerned a call to ministry, in that he or she is compelled to serve or aid in the work of ministry, such as secretarial or serving positions. Only a select few does God call to the ministry, or specifically administering the word of God. This involves preaching and teaching as well as pastoring as qualified in passages such as 1 Timothy 3:1-7. This latter call is what this book is all about. Allen communicates clearly and concisely in keeping with the teachings in Scripture. If you are considering work in ministry, you need to read this book. I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
